Cruise Control and Engine Brake

As a result of an intermittent fault on my engine brake and a warranty software update on my Cummins ISL 425 I have the benefit of an ECM download of the settings and parameters. I have one of the Brakeswitch.com units which changes the engine brake enabling from release of accelerator to touching the service brake pedal (aside of course the Hi off Lo switch), which is the common method over here in the UK. In my CC manual it clearly states not to have engine braking deployed when in cruise, which it seems to me would be logical with accelerator deployment, it would confuse the cruise. However with service brake pedal deployment this auto turns off cruise in any event so not an issue. It is clear from my ECM dump that there is an option to have cruise deploy the engine brake enabling the cruise control to maintain speed when going downhill for example, whilst remaining in cruise, which would be great, sort of like my adaptive cruise control on my Audi. The engineer can do this from his laptop insite program but seems a little vague on implications.
?   Do any members have this feature (engine braking in cruise) enabled and can you share your experience of it? ?   Did you initiate this enablement on the ECM or was it there up front when you got the coach? ?   Do you have engine brake deployment upon service brake pedal application? and...
?   If you do is this through an ECM setting (which there is) or through a third party black box like brakeswitch.com?

Hope there are some with some knowledge for me out there.

Michael, in your 2nd sentence did you have them print out the "Features & Parameters" for your files?
If not, I'll answer your question in the order below: Note: I keep Jake Brake ON all the time.

1. Under Topic "Engine Brake Contol", then sub-topic "Cruise Control Activation" should say ENABLED. Works great, when going downhill in Cruise Control, Jake Brake kicks in when assuming set speed, Cruise kicks back in.

2. I have "Engine Brake Control" 2 stage Jake Brake "Enabled with Cruise Control Operating. It was Enabled on my Engine ECM from factory and I always make sure with any software upgrades to keep Features & Parameters as original unless I'm purposely changing an item.

3. If in Cruise and I hit Brake Pedal or Cancel on Smart Wheel, you then hit the RESUME button to go back into CRUISE at current setting.

4. Cruise Control and Jake Brake are set through Cummins ECM
5. On your ECM Features & Parameters, on Topic "CRUISE CONTROL" should say ENABLE, sub-topic Auto-Resume - should say ENABLE.

Let me know if any clarification is desired.

Firstly, apologies the post went twice!! Mike, Thanks for your feedback, I have the complete ECM download file, pre and post the update, as an Excel spreadsheet so I can read every setting. I am confident that the Jake on Cruise can be enabled but I did not understand why the CC manual was so adamant about having Jake off when on Cruise control. I will get this set when I get the engineer back.
My other question relates to Jake application. Assuming the switch is on Lo or Hi as a given in any of this, does your Jake apply when you lift your foot from the accelerator or when you put your foot on the service brake? Mine is the latter but due to the addition of a "brakeswitch.com". However I note that it seems you could enable this feature in the ECM, so which way does yours work and if it is at service brake application is this achieved by an ECM setting?

Michael, YES to either, with Jake on and you lift foot from accelerator OR put foot on service brake the Jake comes on when ECM recognizes safe engine speed/engine rpm for Jake to go into Gear 5, then Gear 4 or directly to Gear 4.
NOTE: Make sure under Topic "Engine Brake Control" sub-topic Vehicle Braking the ECM Value Shows: Exhaust/Engine Brake.
I can't speak to the Cummins Manual not wanting the Jake on with Cruise On or the Brakeswitch topic.

Hi Michael,

When my Jake Brake is set to Hi or Low and the Cruise is set mine works like this;
When I start down a hill the cruise will start to back off. When the accelerator is fully released (coasting) the Jake will come on by itself. After getting to the bottom of the hill the cruise will start to react and as soon as the accelerator comes off of fully released the Jake will release and the cruise is back in control. All this without any input from me.
It works perfectly on my coach and I don't see any reason why it should not be used this way. The only problem I can see with the way yours works is when you touch the brake pedal to activate the Jake brake your cruise would turn release and need to be reset. I wouldn't really care for that.
It works the same without the cruise being on. When I fully lift off the accelerator the Jake brake will come on. Any movement of the accelerator the Jake will turn off.
