Fowl smell when coach is store

Our coach gives off a fowl rotten egg kind of smell when it is stored inside. Had the holding tanks professionally flushed, no luck. Anyone have any ideas?

If your coach has sat for months, one of the following could be the culprit -

  • The fresh water tank was not treated with bleach to keep various growths under control
  • One of more traps is dry, My first target would be the washer/dryer drain.
  • Old water in the lines
By the way, IMHO this really is a DIY task. Free and easy - water, bleach, a bit of time.

The rotten egg smell suggests a hydrogen sulfide compound which is often water related. Charging batteries give off hydrogen, which is odorless.

What model and Year of coach? Could be debris in the P traps! Are your dump hoses clean? Have flushed your vent pipes. Look for water leaks and stains. Is your hydronic heating system been flushed and checked for leaks? Are your propane tanks or stove leaking. You better check your refer for leaks. You might be looking forward to a fire.

Often a rotton egg smell will occur when batteries are being charged at a very high rate (sulfuric acid). In an inclosed area the odor would not dissipate. This would be amplified by a bad cell causing the inverter charger to attempt to charge at 100-150 amps dc. If you store your coach with power connected try disconnecting power and see if the odor is eliminated. Monitor your batteries with a digital multimeter to see if any read below 12vdc any battery that reads below will have a shorted cell.

A fowl smell must mean that a chicken has been living in the coach. A foul smell is something else entirely.

Check for leaking propane.

Perhaps the foul fowl has either fouled itself or has left a fowl egg that has since gone foul. ;o)

A foul smell emanates when the plywood under the tile floor has been flooded a few times and dry rot sets in.. I had to use a sealer on the wood under the galley area to stop mine after the third hose broke in the galley slide itself and flooded the forwarded portion of the coach..
