Selling My Coach

I plan on selling my motor home and tow over the next few months and am looking for some advise on how to go about doing that. It's the first time I've sold one, so I'm not familiar with the issues and pitfalls. I know my options are to sell it myself, consign it or sell it to a dealer. The motor home is a 2001 Allure and the tow is a 2001 Jeep Grand Cheroke.

Any advice or tips on how to accomplish this in the fastest, easiest and most profitable manner would be greatly appreciated.

Here's my two cents worth: (that's all it's worth). You are using the best source right now. The internet. Retail sale. There are lots of great RV sites and E-Bay, etc. It takes time, but take some good photos and be patient.
If you sell to a dealer, you will probably receive the lowest amount but get rid of it fastest.
Selling the toad along with the rig is an option, but Jeeps are easy to tow (no transmission problems) and the hitch is the only thing that would encourage someone to take it.
As a former car dealer, I'd recommend selling the Jeep on your own, newspaper or internet. Seperate it from the motor home and you will have a cleaner transaction. No need to haggle over values, etc. I may be wrong. My wife told me I wasn't always right. Imagine that!

Hi,

Another two cents. I sold our Jeep Grand Cherokee "toad" via AutoTrader on-line. To make it attractive to the largest marketplace, I removed the tow hitch and didn't mention the "toad" application in my picture ad. When interested parties looked at the car, I explained fully why the tires were quite a bit more worn (40K miles) than one would expect for only 25K miles on the odometer. I think the absence of the tow hitch and then honesty about the towing helped make the sale to my non-motorhome buyer.

FWIW - I've heard that, in some ... if not in all states ... the seller is actually legally required to reveal the fact that a vehicle's actual towed mileage is higher than indicated.

I've bought and sold two coaches using the internet and found it to be faster and easier than any other method. I would think consignment would also be a good alternative but it is a bit expensive, running as high as 10 percent. It all depends on what you're comfortable doing.

The key is to price it right. Don't price it as high as a dealer, you're not providing the services a dealer provides. Spend some serious time on the net seeing what people are asking for similar coaches. Find out what a dealer would pay you outright for it, and then add 20% and see what you get.

This is not the time of the year to sell. If you can wait until Spring, there will be a lot more buyers out there.
