Battery Conversion 8D's to Golf Cart 6V in Magna

I have the standard sliding tray with 2 8D's for the house on my Magna. Has anyone managed to cram six Trojan t-105's or six Costco 6v golf cart batteries in there? It seems a little short in one direction. I am thinking of having a shop extend the back of the tray an inch or two. There is plenty of room for that as far as I can see. This seems much simpler and less expensive than switching to a double tray setup.

Do a search, as I recall reading about 3-4 months ago that one board member found one specific battery that had the right foot print to fit into what you are asking. Just can't recall the name of the poster or the battery:)!

Good luck on your search,

Rich, I am in the exact same situation. Could fit 6 of the Costco's in there if the slide was literally 1/2" longer (without the fiberglass tray). I think at some point I'm going to do the same thing you mentioned and have the slide lengthened a little bit. Will have to look at the latching mechanism to see what to do about that.

I could only get 4 of Sam's golf cart batteries in the tray. I think the extra space behind the tray may be needed for the cables to drop into when the tray is pushed in.
Four golf cart batteries will give you the same capacity as the two 8D's and be easier to get out if you want to change them. I really wanted to put 6 batteries in so the total capacity would be greater.

Rich,

In the standard battery tray I have six US Battery US 145 XC2 251 amp hour in a series parallel configuration. This gives me a total of 753 ah at 12VDC. Only the US Battery XC2 model will fit the tray with six units.
I just finished a week of dry camping and the performance is exceptional.

I recommend them.

Jim,

I would have the slide tray lengthened in the back. There is plenty of room back there to go an inch or two still leaving room for the cables and that way you will not disturb the latch at all. I may call a welding shop and have it done. They should also be able to make up all the cabling I will need for the 6V connections. I would have them pull my Lifelines as well since each one weighs more than I do! I wonder what I do to dispose of the Lifelines...

Yep, it was George - sorry I could not remember.
Just FYI, plenty of head room in most CC's battery compartments. Four L16's will fit where the two 8D's fit. More AH capacity, if that is important. Costs will be close for non AGM.

Our Lifelines 800aH's are treating us well so far.

Best of luck,

George, Thanks. Could you please send a picture of your installation? Would be very helpful. Yes, the US Battery XC2 series is 4mm shorter in length than a Trojan T105 but the same width. This made the difference? The length and width of the XC2 6v series seems to be the same, not just the 145. The 145 is taller.

Thanks.

Mikee,

Got the XC2s at my local battery warehouse http://www.batterysalesandservice.com/
I think I paid about $150 each without a trade. With trade they were about $135 each.
