Veriszon JetPack

Hi - Just wondering if anyone out there has experience using the Verizon JetPack model MiFi5510 L 4G LTE. Looking at this for internet connectivity in remote areas. I'm also curious how well it might work in an "Extended Network" situation. In other words, connecting into a non-Verizon cell tower. Also if roaming charges are excessive with that connection. Many thanks in advance for any helpful information.

Scott, we have been using the jet pak since January. Have had very good service. Purchased it in Tucson after getting fed up with poor wifi at lazidays. Have used it across Az, NM, West Texas and hill country of Texas. Signal strength can vary but always was able to get connection. We do not use it to stream video only email, Skype occasionaly and web surf. The 5gig bucket has served us fine, no roaming charges just monthly 50 dollar chg.

I have Verizon's first MiFi they came out with, not a 4G. I've been all over the USA with it and zero problems. My wife and I are on our computers at the same time with it. It's plenty fast. No roaming charges. You set up your plan by number of Gigs you desire. Starting with 1, 2, 4, 8, 10. Of course the more gigs the more the fee.

You can call them and change up or down during the billing cycle.

I haven't been anywhere that it didn't work.

I have the same device, but through AT&T. Same 5 gig same monthly cost. AT&T allows you to put it in a standby mode if it doesn't need to be used for a while. The cost drops fro $50 to $10 a month. We've been using it for almost 2 yrs now and love it.

I have the Verizon Jetpack 4G 890L and have used it all over the USA with no problems. You won't find any jetpack that will work in remote locations if the cell service is limited. For semi remote locations we use the Wilson Sleek booster with the Jetpack. Ordered it from Walmart then ordered the window mount bracket and the taller antenna. It comes with car mount and power cord. It gives us enough bars to get online. Very happy with the Jetpack. If you are not in a 4G area, it automatically switches to 3G or whatever is available. The roaming cost is governed by your plan. I have family share data plan which includes roaming and long distance on the cell phones. You can add your iPhones to the plan and share the data. They have different plans. I have the highest GB plan because I use my laptop a lot. I also use the Jetpack for my Kindle and for the grandkids games. You can connect up to 10 devices. We even used it in Canada for an addition charge. Worked great!! You do have to watch your data usage. I have it set up so that I get emails and text messages on my cell when I'm at 50%, 75% and 100% usage. I can then decide if I want to go over and pay more, which I think is $10 per unit. Here's an idea for the boonies...if the equipment is light enough, attach it to a tethered helium balloon ~1000ft up. I bet you can get a connection then and your neighbors will be glad to spilt the expenses with you Winking smile.

Scott, we have the Verizon jet pac and it is our primary source for internet access, even in our stick house. DW and I can be on separate PC's simultaneously with no issues. Speed is fine. We've used it while traveling and had no issues. We have ours bundled with our Verizon wireless phone service and we pay right at $160 per month for two smart phones and the jet pac with 8 gig data.

Scott, I had a Verizon MiFi LTE but don't know what model. I never had a problem with reception but it was very expensive. I was paying $50 a month for 5G and continually ran over. It's an additional $10 for every gig you go over.

In my experience Verizon is the best. I travel quite a bit in my work and have tried all the others (AT&T, Sprint and TMobile). Some of them are good, but rarely beat out VZW. Their LTE speeds and coverage have been wonderful, many times beating a wifi connection at a hotel.

They are more expensive, no question about that.
If I were acquiring new VZW service now, I would do it in a roundabout way. There are still quite a few accounts available with unlimited data plans that you can "buy". Search ebay and craigslist for "Verizon Unlimited Data". Once you buy it from someone, you get on the phone with a Verizon rep and accept financial responsibility for the account. You then use your own device and a VZW store will give you a sim card to use with it. As long as you don't upgrade that account, the unlimited data plan is grandfathered and preserved.
I have used their mifi devices quite a bit, but since none of them use a sim card and support LTE, I have lately been using either a mini ipad or LTE android phone. I just swap the sim card to the device and create a wifi hotspot, works great!
It sounds more complicated than it really is. There are a bunch of threads online on how to do it or I can assist offline.

I don't completely understand the technology but we spend the summer in an area with very limited cell phone coverage and the Verizon MiFi while slow always works even when the cell phone indicates no service. I have been that the wireless requires less signal strength than the cell phone.

Had the Verizon Mobile HotSpot for just under a year, Model 4620L, got that one because it has a port for an external antenna, not sure if the antenna works on 4G, but it does on 3G. Been very happy with it, been all over, usually stay fairly close to the larger cities but can't think of a place that it didn't work.
Here is something of interest, When I do a speedcheck (speedtest.net), usually get around 10M down and 6M to 10M up. Friend just got the AT&T (he's in Henderson NV and now in Williams AZ), he's getting 20M down and 14M up. Looked at the coverage map compared it to Verizon and really couldn't tell about the AT&T 4G because the way the map was constructed (and didn't want to spend the time), have a 2 year contract with Verizon. Will take a look when our contract is up. We have the "share Everything Plan", 2 smart phones and the MiFi, leave the MiFi plugged in all the time in the MH. You can use the smarthone as a hotspot.

X's 2 on the 4260.. Ours is a No Contract 20GB per month from Millecon. Deactivate it when not traveling.
In addition to the external antenna jack, we've also been in areas so far on the fringe of coverage that we've had to slide this into a Wilson Sleek 4G amplifier to make things work. Not ideal, but we just swap the external antenna over to the Sleek from the JetPack - and away we go...
We've been watching the tech pages of the Escapees, where Gordo from Maximum Signal has been keeping everyone up to date on his FCC approval cycle for his up coming 'All-In-One' 4G and LTE amp. When that is available, we'll add that into our final Cell Side of our 'to the internet' bridge:)! (We also have the WiFi Ranger and Pro (a Billet with Omni roof top antenna. And a secondary cable with a yagi directional antenna for times the Omni can't pull in a signal.)
We're still in the 'teething stages' with both the WiFi and the JetPack usage, with an occasional Droid via PDA Net to round things out. So far so good!!!

Some of the flash based speed tests can exaggerate your speeds and are not a real good indicator of real world usage, so I would take those speed differences between AT&T and VZW with a grain of salt. They often only test a very small file and extrapolate the results.
The best way to test speeds is with an actual large download, something that takes several minutes. I have used 2 sites for this:

This one tests your latency (very important on cellular connections) and a larger file. There is a manual 2mb image at the bottom of the page you can download and time as well.

This page has many different file sizes. Download one and time it to see what your actual download speed is.
