Texas To Florida Travel Recommendations

We are planning to travel from Dallas Texas to South Florida in the month of February.
We are looking for recommendations on scenic routes, good RV campgrounds, and attractions we might want to check out along our way. We have the entire month reserved for our travels.

Ron, it would help if you gave us the exact destination in South Florida as routes and places to stay would be different east coast vs west coast of FL. 2 options: go over to Vicksburg MS for Civil War stuff, then south on US61 thru Tunica (casinos if you're interested, if not, they have some nice RV parks there), then down to Vidalia Louisiana just across the river from Natchez MS. We stay at River View RV Park in Vidalia. It's right on the MS river and there is a nice paved walking path along the river. You can watch the barges on the river. In Natchez, there are old Victorian homes and their cemetery has evening ghost walking tours. Or option 2: head down to I-10 and visit New Ibera Tabasco Factory, New Orleans. We stayed at the KOA off I-10 at Lafayette. In New Orleans we stayed at Pontchartrain Landing RV Park. In the pandle of FLorida, there is a Naval Aviation Air Museum in Pensacola. Florida Caverns (small but pretty) in Marianna FL. We stay at East Bank Corps of Engineers campground on Lake Seminole. In Freeport FL Live Oak Landing a beautiful RV park about 11 miles from the beaches. If you're going down the east coast, take US19 to US98 east to the Suncoast Parkway toll. On US 19, there is Rock Crusher Canyon RV park and a few others. More info on what you like to do would also help. Enjoy your trip!

I just did this route two weeks ago. You have a choice, I-20 or I-10. It really depends on what you want to see along the way

If you take I-10, the Mobile area is very interesting. There is a very upscale campground near I-10 in Orange Beach AL. (http://www.heritageorangebeach.com/)

We took I-20 as we went to the Atlanta area for the Good Sam rally. If you decide to take I-20 a great thing to do is take the plant tour at the Hyundai factory in Montgomery, AL (http://www.hmmausa.com/?page_id=151).

I am sure others will have suggestions, but these two are winners.

We don't have an exact destination. We thought the Keys might be a nice destination. We would probably go down the Gulf Coast and return along the Atlantic coast. Your thoughts and input is appreciated.

Ron, One the things we enjoyed was part day trip out of the everglades toward the gulf. The trip was1 to 2 hours and was very interesting. We found it at a Everglades visitor center. The boat tour was located next to the visitor center.


The name is the 10,000 island tour cruise. You can find it under Everglade National Park boat tours. We found it in an AAA Florida tour book.. The cost in 2011 was $26.50.

Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Seminole Indian Museum in Clewiston is very intersting.
There is a Corps of Engineers park in Moore Haven FL called Ortona South. It's out of town and sits on the canal from Lake Okeechobee to the gulf. Manatees swim up to the locks and wait for them to open. I would make reservations for that park in the winter. Rainbow Springs State Park in Dunnellon FL is nice. Full hookups.

Hi Ron,

I tried to answer you on the forum but was having issues doing it from the ipad.

Hi Ron, We live in Panama City and make the trip to and from DFW area at least twice a year. For years we went across 20 and down I- 49 in LA to 10 but now that they have fixed up I-45 we like to head down south on it. At Conroe we take 105 down to I-10 at Beaumont to avoid Houston.

In the panhandle of FL I highly recommend you stop in Pensacola (as someone mentioned before) and see the Naval Air Museum. They just recently opened another hanger full of planes. There is plenty of room to park your coach and car in tow. They have a nice snack bar there as well.

Of course, our beaches are beautiful in the panhandle though they may be a bit chilly in February. There are outlet malls and such that will be open but that is the off season. Later in February spring break starts so I would recommend you skip Panama City at that time.

Rv Parks we like (in no particular order): When we bought our Affinity last year we spent some time in and around Cortez, FL. We stayed at an interesting RV park in Palmetto FL called Frog Creek. Not the nicest park but definitely the nicest staff. They have breakfast most mornings and ice cream socials and all kinds of stuff going on.

In the orlando area we stay at Bill Fredrick Park at Turkey Lake. It is a City of Orlando park and is 1/2 the price of any where else in the area.

John Prince Park Campground in Lake Worth

Rally Park, Lazy days Campground out side Tampa

Front Desoto Park in Pinellas County (on the beach)

The Great Outdoors in Titusville, Fl

If you need any work done on your coach I would recommend you use the following: Josam in Orlando for alignment and suspension TCI in Orlando for tires. Suncoast designers in Hudson FL for window issues Fountain RV - Butch for any other repairs

We have traveled around the state quite a bit. Some of our favorite places to play are (more or less ordered from north west, south and back north east) Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park in Homosassa Springs Busch Gardens in Tampa Fort Myers and Sanibel Go across Alligator alley ... Take an airboat ride The casino in Homestead The Keys Fort Myers/lake worth area is nice. Fantasy of Flight in Polk City Universal Studios in Orlando Merritt Island National Preserve outside Titusville The old fort and historic areas in St Augustine Jacksonville Zoo Old Fernandina Beach area

There is sooo much to do but these are what I consider the best we have done.
