Glendenning power cord retractor

I have been noting with interest the various comments on the subject of power cords not retracting properly so I thought it time to chime in. My Glendening device (barrel type) began driving me nuts by not retracting properly, if at all . Somewhere I heard that Glendening had a rebuild kit so I ordered it. The rollers were larger and upon examination of the original ones I found that the axle through the rollers had elongated the hole in the rollers thus causing inadequate pressure on the cord. Even the spring adjustment was not adequate to overcome the lack of pressure. Upon replacing all of the rollers with the newer, larger diameter ones everything works great and has been for over a year. Life is wonderful.

Curious on the price of the kit and how hard to do the install.

Thanks

Gary,

When I ordered the parts I also order the main drive gear so I don't know what the cost for just the rollers would be. As it turned out I did not need the gear but I put the new one on anyway. The job is somewhat difficult in that you will be sitting on the floor between the bed and the closet. Not comfortable at all. Mostly things are straight forward but be very careful in removing the old rollers and their axles. It is easy to drop a piece into the tub. Take pictures so you can refer to the order of things. As I remember the spring assembly has to come off also but it is just a matter of taking your time. Patients is the key on this job. Some have suggested applying silicone to the power cord but this seems counter intuitive to me. The problem results from the rollers not pinching tight enough, due to wear, and thus the cord is not driven (forced) into the tub. Making the cord slick would seem to exacerbate the problem.

I agree on the silicone question... would seem to lessen the ability of the rollers to grip the cord. In fact, I have found mine will slip if the cord is wet so I always dry and clean the cord with a rag as it is retracting.
Thanks for the info. I have wondered how well I would fit myself in the space between the bed and the closet when the time comes to work on the device. I've learned with motorhomes that if it isn't broken, it will be at some time.

Over on the FMCA site, there is a gentleman who has access to new parts for the winders, when and if anyone's goes bad. You remove the old plastic gears and replace them with metal gears. If someone needs more info, just contact me and I will get the info to ya. Mine is still in the stone age with a hand winder. Also not sure if it works with the "Glendenning" winder.

One to keep in mind with the silicone is it serves as a cleaner and conditioner do NOT just spray it on and leave it! You want to wipe it down which cleans away first and works it into the covering to help keep it pliable.

My cable actually goes into a tub, horizontally, which I think is wrong, but the install only allows the tub that way. However the main point is the cable is not on a reel, so it just coils in the tub, but not very well. I can understand the issue of silicone appearing counter intuitive but my logic was I needed the cable to flop easily into the tub, and also I wanted to soften the outer sheath to make it more pliable, for the same reason but also so the rollers sort of melded into the sheath allowing more surface area to grip. Either way it works for me........ at the moment!
