First drive and oil pressure question

I have been taking the coach to Cummins for various service issues. I have had (5) short trips of 50 miles only (to Cummins) which is hardly enough time to get anything warm. Today on start-up the oil pressure was between 75 and 80 PSI on the gauge. On my short highway trips it has been between 45 and 55 psi. The CC oil pressure gauge has been relatively steady each time. Today however I took it for a 100 mile test run and found the oil pressure at be at 45/50 psi at 55/60 miles per hour. However, as I approached the exit ramp the pressure dropped to 20/25 psi as I slowed and seemed to steady at 15/20 psi while stopped waiting for the signal to turn. When back on the interstate the pressures returned but continued to vary from 35/55 psi. Each time a gear changed the pressure would increase and then return to that range. When I stopped to top off the tanks the oil pressure was at 15/20 psi while idling. A last piece of information is that I have a 2004 version of the Silverleaf System on the coach. Everything on it seems to work - all pressures (but the oil pressure readout) vary as the engine warms. However, the oil pressure never leaves the 55.0 PSI range and I have discounted it as not working. There are no leaks, no smoke and it runs great - as near as a newbie can tell.
Well the question is -- do I have a problem or is this oil pressure correct when the engine is hot just coming off the interstate? Glen Burgess

Glen,I'm sure you will get many answers but in general I think that is quite common. I have an 08 Intrigue with a CAT C-13 and it varies considerably depending on temperature, how far it has been driven, etc.I doubt that you have an issue. John08 Intrigue10 Ford Escape

That's almost exactly the same numbers I get. The one number you don't have is when the coach is

being driven on a hot day in the hills pulling grades and the coach is hot, then depending on the RPM

and how fresh your oil is the pressure can very from 35 to 40 lbs depending on the RPM. Then at idle

you might guess the pressure is 15 at idle. This all normal. Now, I will say Valvoline will give you

another 5 to 10 lbs of pressure, depending on its life over Rotella, Delo, and Pennzoil. TWI 2004

First the Silverleaf gets its info from the ECU. A lot of ECUs report oil pressure as yes or no ie 0 or 55 psi. To really know what the oil pressure really is you need to hook up a manual gauge and prove the reading
If it is low, the most likely reason is diluted fuel, a diesel leak into the oil. Pull the dipstick and see if it is overfull or has any diesel smell to it. When you hook up a mechanical gauge does it agree with the dash gauge? If the dash gauge reads low it is most likely the oil pressure sensor.
You nee to verify thru Cummins what the normal oil pressure for that engine is.
If the oil pressure is really low, then you need to determine why. That can be another entire conversation.

Those pressures do not appear to be out of range, but at the least monitor them.

I had the oil changed at Cummins and they used Valvoline - 15/40 Blue which according to them is their standard. I will check the oil level and look for any oil mixes but I also wonder at how accurate the gauge really is. I am disappointed the Silverleaf VMS 200 EL only shows 0 or 55 psi. I assumed the readings came from the Cummins engine data like the various temps.
If the ISL really did have low/no oil pressure would it register a problem and shut down?
I will call the Cummins dealer that has done the work and get their opinion today since I need to make a 200 mile trip to HWH for general service tomorrow. Thanks for your help!!!!!!!

As I said earlier, I suspect the gauge accuracy.

Glen just a thought. I had the same reading of low oil presser. In my research at various sources I found out that a bad sender reading from another source could cause this fault (low oil pressor). I checked the different sensors in the system and found the radiator coolant level sensor's wire connector was corroded. I pulled the connector and reconnected and the problem went away.
Something to try. Hope this works for you.
