Towing a Cadillac SRX

We chose the Cadillac SRX and wondering if anyone can offer any tips or tricks regarding this toad. We did buy the blue of shield to help.

We've been towing ours 2 1/2 years and love it. The manual allows the 2011 to be towed and setup is easy. Let it run for 5 minutes and slip it in neutral by slipping a small screwdriver in a small slot under the gear shift cover. Run it every time you refuel (maybe once a day). When you get to your destination run it 5 minutes and drive. The manual warns not to exceed 65mph. Lots of room in the SRX and very comfortable. It's a perfect match for us. We've pulled it about 25k miles.

No, new cars have electronic odometer. If the key is off, no miles.

No it doesn't because it is electronic and power is off. Speedometer pickup is on the final output just before driveshaft.

Laura, on my 2014 SRX the key is not on. To tow the car the transmission is placed in Park. The engine is turned off and the key removed. The leather shift boot is lifted. A button is pushed under the boot allowing the shift to be moved to Neutral.

So, there is no key in, no battery drain, no lock on the steering wheel. Just a great toad. I tow 400 mile days while only running the engine for a few minutes in the morning before departure.

Regarding towing of SRX. My mistake. No key removal as my car has no key.

So, I'll try to get it right this time.

Shift to park.
Turn off engine.

Lift leather shift boot.

Push button below boot and shift to neutral.

What type of braking system do you have with it? We are just now researching and are thinking of using the air brakes and getting the Air Force one system but it's expensive???

I usually don't use an auxiliary braking system. But, when I do, it is my Brake Buddy.

It's illegal in most States not to. Toad weight varies and is as low as 1500 in California and Canada. I've been in situations where if I hadn't had it, I'd be dead, so I don't tow without

I understand there are some states where the coach driver not using auxiliary toad brakes will be automatically charged with involuntary manslaughter if he kills someone who runs in from of his coach.
I will NEVER run without my Air Force One Brakes.

California, and many other states, treat a Toad different than a trailer. Calif has a "stopping distance" law for toads. It has nothing to do with the weight of the vehicle..

Kenny, thanks for your help, but you're wrong. Most states, including California, have a braking distance standard that must be met when towing a vehicle(not a trailer). I am certain that none of the lifting tow trucks you see pulling vehicles have auxiliary braking.

Kenny, they're trying to sell you on the need for a aux brake, and their aux brake in particular.

I'm not saying there is never a need for aux braking. A relatively light coach with a relatively heavy toad would benefit from an aux brake. When I add a 4,000 lb towed vehicle to a 40,000 lb motorhome it's like a Chevy Suburban towing a 600 lb trailer.

GVWR on my coach is 46,500 lbs. My fully loaded weight, with towed vehicle, is 45,000 lbs so I am not even at GVWR let alone GCWR of 53,500 lbs. Additionally, I have three axles with big brakes including disk brakes on the front. I can easily make the braking distance specification.

Just my thoughts.

Even if the tow bar fails the crossed safety cables will hold. The risk of breakaway is vanishingly close to zero. I'm more worried about the earth tilting on it's axis. Now there's a problem.

Well, in the last 5 years I personally know of 5 cases where the car got loose. The safety cables rarely do their job. do as you wish, but the law is pretty clear and the lawyers know how to win cases.

A 4 down towed car is considered a trailer. Tow trucks are a whole different set of rules.

I have one and will keep using it. The coach stops better with the Toad pushing it and with the supplemental brake.

What I've heard is that typically you don't get stopped unless you are a big rig, towing something like a Hummer. The issue however might be with your insurance company.
