Spare tire rack; was Replacement tir

Please describe how you hung the rack. What was it secured to? The bay ceiling? If so, how did you know what was/wasn't above the ceiling?

I have a 40' coach, and in the largest bay there are two 3/8" bolts that come down through the floor and are bolted to a bracket that is welded to the metal beams. I simply added a small piece of angle iron to each bolt to widened the area between the two bolts to accomodate the tire. I used threaded rods screwed into the angle iron and a piece of white oak about 12" wide and 1" thick. I drilled holes in each end of the oak for the rods to pass through and put a washer and a bolt on each one. I removed the bolt and let one end of the board down onto the slide floor and pushed the spare tire onto the board and then lifed the end up and put the bolt in place. I then tightened each end until the tire was firmly against the top of the bay. Nothing fancy, but seems to work well. Lifting the tire on it is not an easy task, but hopefully I will not have to use the spare.

Just thought I'd throw in an alternative. I layed the spare tire down on the bottom of the third bay door back on my 40' Intrigue. I then make a 3/4" plywood shelf that completely covered the tire. The shelf is supported on the two sides by 1 1/2" aluminum angle that is screwed into the sides. The space above the tire(12") is totally useful as is the space in front of tire. The spare is easy to put in place & retrieve if needed.

Just a different approach to accomplish the same thing.
