Towing a vehicle

Yahoo Message Number: 14576
We have just purchased a new 40' Country Coach Inspire in Oregon. We want to tow our RX300 Lexus (2 wheel front drive) and would like to know if there are any recommendations on towing hardware. We would also like information/opinions on the pro's/con's of using a towing dolly.

Call Hitch Pro and Tow in Eugene, (541) 434-2403. They were the first to convert Lexus Landcruisers, and have experience on about every brand and model. John

I know nothing about your RX but I do use a tow dolly. Neither of my vehicles can be towed 4 down without modifications thus I chose to get a dolly.
Con's.

Something else to deal with.

Extra weight, probably 600-700 lbs.
Not sure I can think of any more cons, I am sure there are some, but others may reply.
Pro's.

Probably costs about the same if not less than towing hardware.
I can tow which vehicle I want to.
Don't have to change hardware if I buy a new vehicle.
Probably more Pro's but will let others reply

I find that I can hook up in about 5 minutes and I have no problems with the dolly. Most times I leave the dolly hooked up; if not then there is probably room on the site to put it and it is easy to move around by hand, vehicle off first. Just don't pull it up or down a hill by hand. If I had a towable 4 down vehicle when I got the coach I probably would have had it set up for tow. Now that I am using the dolly I am not sure I would change even if the vehicle could be towed. Will cross that bridge if the time comes and I can always sell the dolly. Thus far I am very happy with the dolly approach. If the coach should break down I can always put it on the dolly and pull it in for service. Just a bit of humor there but another con.
If your coach broke down and you vehicle can not tow the dolly then you have another problem to deal with.

http://www.fmca.com/motorhomingguide/towing/ has some good info on towing.

Hope this helps..

We love to have our car with us. We tow 4 on the floor and not having a dolly means one less thing to store (at home and on the road).

We use a Blue Ox tow bar and love it..less than 5 minutes each time we hook up or un hook.

We use a skirt that stretches from the toad to our CC (under the tow bar)... love this item as it protects our car from road dings. We have heard that the "Mud Flap" can kick rocks up and may not be the best protection.

I don't think you can tow any vehicle with the tow dolly, only one's that has front-wheel drive. Perhaps some 4-wheel drive vehicles may be able to be towed with a dolly, but you would have to get this information in writing, preferably in the Owner's manual. Unless you're going to tow the vehicle backwards (not recommended), you would have to either do the same modification that is required for a none towable vehicle, or get a vehicle that is towable 4 wheels down.

Do you use a surge brake or electric brake?

Having towed with dolly and on all fours I strongly recommend all fours. The dolly is a pain in the butt when you reach your destination---where do you put it? I recommend the aluminum Blue Ox towbar---it stays on the coach and can be hooked up in two minutes. Your Lexus will probably have to be modified for towing, and Relco seems to know more about that than anyone. They advertise in Motor Home and FMCA magazines. The necessary wiring, base plate, tow bar and `car modification are expensive, but worth it. I also recommend a braking system on your toad---I have found M & G to be excellent.

Good luck,
