Thanks to everyone who offered advice and photos. Thought I was the Lone Ranger on this but obviously there are many owners out there who have made or are considering improvements to the TV and mounting.
Getting rid of that "head thunker" makes a lot of sense. I have carpenter coming over this afternoon to take a look and give me a quote.
