Overhead Lights

Howdy Y'all,

This is embarrassing, but we're not too swift when it comes to troubleshooting so maybe someone could help us.

We have two overhead lights that will not come on. These lights are located in the front and center on the driver side of the coach. The bulbs are not burnt out.

Checking the fuse panel in the galley, we find that 2 fuses are labeled as follows:
1. Step light, entry door switch, entry step, living room lights.

4. Toilet ceiling fan, bath/dinnette, ceiling lights.

The step light, entry door switch, and entry step are all working, so we conclude that this fuse is good. Also, the toilet ceiling fan is working, so this fuse is good.

What could the problem be? We don't know where to go from here. We do have a small multimeter.

I don't have the coach handy, but I seem to recall that the switch for those lights is at the entry panel alongside the pax seat.

I never use the lights. The switch is in such an illogical place, and the area they illuminate just (in my opinion) doesn't need it.

I did add an under counter light to the left of the cooktop, and am close to installing one under the cabinet on the driver's side, adjacent to the hot water heater.

I dont know exactly how the Inspire is layed out but it would seem to me that would be the map lights and entry lights. The switches should be near the passenger seat and one on the drivers side with all the other switches by the brake, it should be labeled map light. I hope this what you are talking about. Congratulations on being hurricane free there in St. Augustine. My sister in Naples had some yard and pool damage, but her house was not damaged.

I should have mentioned that we checked the rocker switch at the entry steps, which controls four ceiling lights in the front and center of the living room area. It was on. A rocker switch above the main breaker panel in the galley area controls a ceiling light in the hallway and two ceiling lights in the galley area.

To further clarify, in the living room area, there are two rows of ceiling lights, one on the driver's side and the other on the passenger side. The three ceiling lights in the row on the passenger side are working. On the driver's side, only the ceiling light in the galley area is working in that row; the other two ceiling lights toward the front and center of the coach are out on that side.

As I mentioned, the fluorescent lights are not burnt out. I need to find a fuse that protects these two lights.

If I understand you correctly, you have installed a light under the cabinet in the galley, just to the left of the stove top, and you're thinking of installing a light under the cabinet above the enclosure where the water heater is located on the driver's side of the galley area. Do I have it right?

Hi Todd,

Well, I'm not sure what a map light is, but we have two small, black lamps on each side of the coach near the driver and passenger chairs. These lights have a twist switch on the lamps themselves.
There is no rocker switch on the driver's side of our coach for lights. There is a rocker switch at the entry step on the passenger side, which we verified is on (controls four ceiling lights, two of which are not working).

If there are any other switches that control the two ceiling lights on the driver's side of our coach, near the front and center of the living room area, we don't know where they are.

Howdy Y'all,

Another factor that might be relevant is that the two ceiling lights that are not working in the living room area did not go out at the same time. One ceiling light went out first, and second ceiling light right behind it on the same side went out a few days later. This doesn't sound like a fuse.

Do you have a fuze labeled something like 'drivers side slide'? I found that to be the cause of one problem. Also, does anything on the switch come on? I had a wire pulled off of a light switch in the console next to the passenger during service.

Hello to you Gary,

While still at the factory I purchased two recessed fluorescent fixtures for the under cabinet area to the left of the cooktop and for the driver's side cabinet over the water heater. (Actually, the fixtures are the same as the '05 ceiling fixtures.)

The first installed easily (there was 12 volts available and the cabinet bottom was easy to cut through with an X-acto knife). The cabinet bottom is a double bottom. To remove the "floor" of the cabinet, look for (well hidden) staples in the back and the front (the caulk is the giveaway). Then run the Xacto knife around the edges of the "floor". Presto!

I don't know why CC didn't put a light to the left of the cooktop.
It's DARK over there! Guess you have to buy an Allure to get that.

The cabinet over the H2o heater does not lend itself to a fluorescent fixture due to bracing in the cabinet. I'm on the lookout for something smaller that will install recessed.

You have undertaken quite a project, haven't you? I'm sure your modification would represent a significant improvement in lighting, but I don't spend much time at the counter top and my wife hasn't complained about poor lighting. I might install it if I were a man of your skills, but I usually end up making a bad situation worse as soon as I pick up a drill. Years ago, I tried to remove a rusted bolt on a toilet bowl lid in my home with a hammer and chisel and lost half the toilet bowl. And then there was the rabbit cage I thought was so cleverly built, only to have it collapse under a slight wind.

I'm very envious of fellows like you, wishing I had the skills to "invent" things, but I guess I've got to face the truth: I'll just have to stumble around in the dark.
