We're also in California, just finished checking into insurance for our new to us Allure. 5-6 quotes, with the lowest (@$650) being with our current car inusrance company Wawanesa. The catch, no 'agreed to' replacement cost value. No extra rider for glass - so a no go. I went back and forth between Explorer and "Farm and something?" insuance. Both were real close in the same $1200 plus range. I was not comfortable with the way the agent explained what "Farm..." considered OEM covered items within the rig. (Replacement old TV to new LCD TV - would not be covered. Upgraded stereo system, in OEM location - would not be covered, roof mounted auto tracking satelite - would not be covered, etc.) Where as Explorer was very clear that if it was OEM, or insalled by dealer when purchased, or was replacement of existing equipment - it was covered. I do wonder if the "Farm" insurance person I was talking with was accurate in her assessment, but the prices for 'like' coverage, was very close, so I went with Explorer.
One other thing that I determined, was when we do start permanent part timing with either South Dakota or Texas (have not decided yet) as our 'home state' - everyone I asked said to expect lower rates, one said substantially lower... (No firm quotes yet, as we are a year or so away - but good to hear!).
Best of luck - I don't recall them all, but I also checked State Farm, Gilberts, AARP Hartford, GMAC, CCI's (don't recall the company name), and a few other companies....

We had Progressive also with annual rate increases. We use Lazydays RV in Tampa, FL as our agent, the agent (Brenda) got us a quote from National Interstate. Great coverage, lower price. Found good reports about them on rv.net Lonny & Diane Livingston

Dear Fernanda:

Rob Brown here. I am a retired State Farm Agent so you may want to consider that when reading this post.
The simple answer is that you are absolutely correct. State Farm does not have replacement cost coverage or stated value coverage for motorhomes. If you are upside down on the value of your coach versus the loan, you will not be able to recover that amount in a total loss. You are paying for that with your Progressive Policy. It is really a nice option to have but as Progressive is learning, as the coach ages and the value goes down, it doesn't take many total losses to affect the the cost of insurance. They also have the problem of how to replace a coach that is no longer manufactured. In the old days, they could either pay for a new comparable coach purchased at discount from a friendly dealer or write a check for that amount to the owner. Now they have to pay the amount listed on the policy as the replacement value, if you replace the coach (usually within 6 months of the loss and with a coach that costs the same or more). If you don't replace the coach, you get the same amount that State Farm would have paid, market value. So, if you are upside down, you are forced to replace the coach in order to get the replacement value and pay off your loan. The other thing you can do is find an insurance company that has "GAP" insurance. That is a secondary policy or endorsement that covers the "GAP" between the loan amount and the market value of the coach. I don't know if Progressive offers that or not. State Farm did not 4 years ago when I retired. Your lender may have some suggestions. After 44 years of State Farm experience, I am totally biased towards the way they handle things. Having said that, I also like USAA, Progressive and Farmers but not specifically for motorhome coverages. Most large insurance organizations are that way (Large) because they have treated their customers fairly. Also, as you may have read in prior posts, there is no magic about which company is best. CCI offers some advantages by trying to do some discounts due to group association and similar needs. You should probably check them out too. I will stay with State Farm and my State Farm Agent because I think the premiums fair and the settlements are too. One old agent's thought here. Please check out the liability limits and make sure you carry an Umbrella (the insurance kind) with the same company. You have way more exposure from a law suit than any GAP situation. Good Luck and Travel Safe,

Rob 07 Allure 31557 Wet

PS. In light of the recent discussions please note: This is not a commercial post! Also, I have not read your policy, so while the advice is free, it may be worth every penny.

Well said Rob, I'm also a retired State Farm Agent and have tried many times on this forum to educate people that you cannot compare rates with anyone unless everything is exactly the same. Same age, living in the same state, city, county, credit ratings, deductibles, liability limits, driving records, exact same coach, and on and on and on. There are just too many variables. I gave up on giving my two cents worth a long time ago. But, it is fun to listen to discourse, right or wrong. There are some strange ideas out there.

Really good information, guys, I appreciate it. I went from Progressive to State Farm, due to a location change, and it was much less expensive. I thought I was getting an apples-to-apples comparison, but if my stated value is not covered now, that could be a major reason for the difference. I will drag the whole file down to my agent and have another look at it. Gap insurance may be a viable option, I just needed to be aware of it.

Thanks again.

No disrespect intended toward the "captive agent" who gave some very good advice. I too am an insurance agent - I own an Independent Agency and write for many companies and can compare coverages and rates. I write personal lines only, no commercial policies. Keep in mind that when you buy RV insurance from a company primarily in the auto/home market you will get a policy for a BIG auto. I am on my 4th class A and 2nd CC and searched all of my markets and still could not compete with GMAC sold through Good Sam or Campers World. I too don't remember if they offer gap coverage but they are unique to my knowledge in that when your coach is parked or stored for an extended period of time or just a few days - call them and your coverage and rate is dropped to comp only for that period of time. When you get ready to hit the road, call them and you go back to the full amount of coverage you bought - A GREAT MONEY SAVER for those of us who are not full timers. Congratulations to the State Farm agent on his retirement - if only I had gotten in the business 20 years earlier I might be able to but at 67 I like my life style and luxuries so I let my CSR run the agency when I hit the road, take my laptop and cell phone and just go! On the above, I write for a watercraft company that has what they call a lay up provision but till I called GMAC I had no idea that there was a company that handled RVs that way. Good luck on whichever you decide.

We currently have a home and have home owners insurance which covers it. Also, we have a RV and found out that the contents are not covered. Driving down the road is covered however, we park at a RV Park and someone breaks in, we are not covered. We are getting ready to become full-timers and are renting the house and think its time to evaluate the insurance. Recently we had to have a windshield replaced and could not believe the grief over $300. We have been with this insurance company for over 30 years and it seems loyalty does not mean anything. So, we are looking for RV coverage including the contents, welcome your suggestions. Thanks in Advance

We have National Interstate Insurance purchased thru LazyDays Insurance in Tampa. They specialize in full timers and will also insure the toad. They include Coach Net roadside assistance in their policy. One claim, cracked windshield was handled efficiently and quickly.

Yep we have Allied also... used to have progressive, but saw an ad from Good Sam and decided to check with them and they got us a policy thru Allied at half the price. We have had no occasion to file a claim under the policy, I am happy to report, but Allied has a good rep Joseph Burkle

Thanks to all that replied.

Went to the Good Sam website and called the toll free number. This took me to National General Insurance. I signed up with them for my RV and Sonic tow car, was very interested in the coverage they provided. We will see how it goes. Its unfortunate that a company who I have been with for over 30 years could not provide the coverage I needed. I am still upset (really miffed) that they have outsourced their windshield claims to a company that does not know the meaning of customer service or loyalty over $300. I would highly recommend Victor of Arizona Windshields, in Tucson AZ.
