Over-the-road satellite dishes/servers

We have an L2 over-the-road satellite dish on our Intrigue, but haven't signed up with Direct TV or Dish Net yet. Any comments on the best provider of signals for this application?

We have DirecTV and love it, no switching between satelites and a beautifull picture! We have the automatic dish and before I can level the coach we have the satelite and a perfect picture! Have fun....................

Carl,

We are looking to add the satellite dish and will use Dircttv as well. What brand and model do you have that you like so much? Is it in motion or Not?

Thanks,
Kathy

WE have a motosat datastorm (by Hughes) and we love it. Once we learned to work it, we get internet 24/7 and HD tv everywhere, even without a park. We think it's one of the best things we spent money on for the coach. It only works when the coach is stationary, but that works for us. we don't do anything but drive abd navigate when that thing is rolling..............M Bain 05 Allure.

2006 Country Coach Inspire on order

We have 06 Inspire and it came with a Trac Star system, which is
using a Direct HD receiver. I Ihave used others systems on other coaches but like the way this works. The problem was we have Dish and wanted to use it so we had to change out the receiver. The dealer would not do it. We like Dish but only because we have been using it for years and we can't get the same type of programing with Direct. We get both East and West coast network feeds. We use ours as we are driving down the road, yes I know it is against the law, but we like to listen to the news and music on Satelite. Having a small problem with the inverter powering the TV. Seems like the modified sine wave inverter in the Inspire is not compatable with the HD tv, so says Panasonic. We will get it fixed some day soon I hope.

At the present time there are no in motion satellite internet dishes available, only in motion TV. The automatic internet dish is a large pop-up type and only works when stationary.
We ae hoping this will change next year when the new Raysat units are due to become available. They are planning to have both in-motion internet and TV from the same low profile (5" inch high) dome type system.

We are signed up as dealers and therefor have our fingers crossed on this one!

My two cents worth: KVH or similar in-motion is the best by far. The only drawback is the loss of signal in heavy rain or morning condensation. Most of our time in the Motor Home is in the Winter in the Desert SW and Mexico, so we aren't bothered by loss of signal.
The ability watch TV instantly without having to hassle with signal acquisition is a big bonus. Besides, when the scenery gets boring, my Wife/CoPilot can watch Dr. Phil and Oprah at 65 mph without missing a single episode. Is that great, or what?
In our case, we have a house with Direct TV. They activate our Motor Home receiver when we call them. It costs $5.00 per month. If I want to receive my hometown Network stations (ABC, NBC, CBS, etc) I can only receive them within the "footprint" of the Spot-Beam. That seems to be about 400 to 500 miles from home.
Outside of that area, we receive only the Cable stations but no Networks.
You can sign an RV Waiver and receive East/ West Coast Networks in place of your hometown networks if you are Full-Timers.
When we go out for the entire winter, I have them turn off the receivers in the house and activate the Motor Home receiver with East/West feed and we have all the stations in Mexico, or wherever we go.

Hope this helps.

Chris,

We are still debating whether to go for the in motion or not since we really want tv for parked time. We still like looking at the scenary when we drive. We have found XM radio is a must for our road trips in all our cars as well as the coach, especially the comedy channels. The in motion internet would be nice when they get the bugs ot since we have become pogo.com junkies. We will be just thrilled to finally get the coach as it is supposed to be in just before Xmas.

Thanks for the info.

Hi Kathy

In-motion is always a nice option to have all things being equal. Most people just think of TV, but both networks have lots of 24 hour music channels too. When parking, trees and other obstructions can be blocking your line of sight signal, so I always turn on the dish on before doing any of the hook-ups to make sure I have TV.
With in-motion you can see if your TV is working when you pull in, and just move a few feet forward or back to get the satellite if not.
In-motion internet will be real nice, and I think it will be reliable, (as these things go). The same company has their dishes on fast commuter trains in several countries, allowing travelers to be online.

Any idea what the in-motion internet will cost? Sounds great.. but with WiMax on it's way, and Verizon offering higher speeds, it needs to be priced right.
Motosat can be had for $59/month, but you need to stop by the side of the road to use it.

I do not have any firm numbers at this time, but would guess the price will be in the 5k to 6k range plus the usual monthly fees.
The attraction of this dish will be that it is a all in one solution, providing high speed internet, HD TV in either Dish or Direct TV networks and has a built in wireless router. With the new high end coaches getting taller, the low profile (6" inches) will be an important feature as well.

I think poeple ordering a new high line coach will easily pay a couple of thousand extra to have one slimline dish do everything, and the monthly fees are there anyway.

You are correct with the other options such a long range Wi-Fi and wireless aircards, I use both at the present time, (though not WiMax yet of course) but they are do not work in remote areas, and may not ever because of the low customer base.

Some users need to access the internet on a regular basis for commercial reasons, and there are many more of these in the younger high end coach buyers.

I think we can all agree it is an exciting new development which will push other solutions to match it.

Chris.

Chris,

Thanks for the info. I hadn't thought about how it would help you park in a spot so you get reception and not be dinking around forever. I think that alone is probably worth it. We love satellite radio as well but will install a standalone XM unit for that. Which in motion do you have that you like so much? We have heard some folks are not as happy with theirs.

Thanks,
Kathy

Chris, regarding your in-motion sat and XM, Direct TV now uses XM stations as music channels. You should be able to play them thru the Sat.

Hi Kathy

The Raysat dish we are talking about is vapor-ware at the moment, and due to be released sometime next year. The release has already been delayed once, so it is a wait and see thing now.
We are dealers in RV-computer related stuff and will be meeting with the manufacturer at the CES show in Las Vegas in January, and may even get a trial unit to test.

The current coach mounted Internet units only work when stationary and are a big sail in the wind when they are up, but work well otherwise.
