slow engine air compressor

I just started my engine for the first time in 6 months. I know I should have taken it out sooner but I live in S. Louisianna and have been busy with Katrina's aftermath. The engine air compressor would only reach 40 psi while idleing. If I increased rpm to 1000 it slowly went to 80 psi. Then with 1200 rpm it went on up but very slowly to 95 psi then I shut it down. The air pressure held there with the engine off for several hours. I then applied the brakes several times to bleed off some of the air pressure to about 80 psi then restarted the engine and let it idle for about 20 min. while I did some other work.
When I looked at the air pressure it was between 110-120 psi which is where it normally runs. My thoughts are that the air compressor did not function well at first due to the long period of nonuse allowed seals to dry out and shrink? This might make the air compressor less effective at first but perform better the secound time. Any other ideas out there?
