High Coolant Temp-2003 Allure 1st Ave

Yahoo Message Number: 29898
Friends,

Traveling along at 66 mph outside temp. 73 degrees, first time ever, coolant went up to 220 degrees +, engine warning light came on, I slowed down for about a 1/2 mile, system went back to normal cycle of 189 to 201, never had another event.

What do you all suppose caused this, so far, one time event??

Coolant level perfect, just had DCA checked, no leaks...

Thanks, Mike - Allure 2003, 1st Ave Cummins 370

Mike:

Since you quoted very precise numbers, I assume you are using Silverleaf or equivalent and NOT the analog dash gauge. If latter, you can forget about any reliable readings. I used to worry about mine until I installed VMSpc. Found the analog gauge to be 20 to 25 degrees hot!

Second were you trying to attack a grade? Your speed would suggest not, but that will certainly cause coolant temps to spike.

Did you happen to notice what your intake manifold temp did? I have read in Silverleaf materials that it is a leading indicator of high coolant temp, but have not had opportunity drive hills and see if it works that way in real life.

Otherwise I dunno. I wouldn't worry about it unless it repeats. Sounds like something intermitent - temporary interuption of fan operation or maybe defective sending unit, possibly defective radiator cap?? Just shots in the dark. Maybe some of the more diesel savvy members will have better idea.

A stuck coolant thermostat maybe? Has it ever been changed?

Bob,

I have a 1998 Intrigue and I'm always having high temperature readings with my dash analog coolant gauge. What brand and type dash gauge did you replace yours with? Did you also have to change your sending unit to match the gauge?

The analog guages are not defective usually, they do not have a good ground. Add a wire from each guage from the ground post to a good ground point and the value will come a lot closer to vmspc. Dont ask how I figured that out.

Hi Paul:

I did not replace the gauge. From what I am told all analog gauges are suspect. What I did was purchase the VMSpc (essentially Silverleaf that uses a lap top PC for the display) at the Jekyll Rally $395. I thought about purchasing the in dash Silverleaf unit ($2,000, or $3,000 with tire monitor) but decided since I already use a PC to display Microsoft Streets & Trips GPS data I could probably make it do double duty. I experimented and found I could split the screen and show Silverleaf monitor on one half and GPS on other half and be able to see both from drivers seat. In our 450 mile drive back to Naples it worked great. The VMSpc comes with a small interface box that can be easily attached to the wall above driver's feet. In my coach the plug from the ecm is right above the accelerator and one of the VMSpc supplied cables plugs into that (before you buy you need to know how many pin holes your plug has (mine has six holes, but only four actual pins; I think some plugs have eight holes.
Silverleaf has both cables). From the interface box you run a serial cable to your PC. If you do not have a serial port on your PC you can get a serial to USB conversion cable. Depending on how you want to route the cables, you can do the whole thing in 1/2 hour.

The other option I thought about was Cummins Road Relay. I think it is slightly more expensive and the display is not as fancy or flexible (On the VMSpc you can show any of the available gauges and graphs and arrange them any way you want); but Raod Relay is a stand alone unit that will suit your needs if you do not have a PC set-up in the cockpit.

This has finally put to rest my concerns about engine running temp. Now $400 bucks might be a lot to pay for a little piece of mind, but the extra gauges available in the Silverleaf will ultimately help me drive the coach smarter and more efficiently. Plus it will provide plain english text explanation when and if the "Check Engine" idiot light (or worse "Stop Engine"!) comes on so I might have a clue about what to do next.
I would seriously think about either adding the Silverleaf stand alone monitor, the VMSpc or Road Relay.

Bob, thanks, I was on flat ground, I didn't think to check "intake manifold temp", I did take a tool and "tapped" on the Air Temp Sensor and Coolant Temp Sensor and also the Fan Control Module....I've driven 400 more miles since event and unit is cycling as normal.

Larry, thanks, I've thought about the engine thermostat issue as a possibilty, but normally a thermostat just "fails"...No I've never changed the thermostat as my truck friends say they go to engine overhaul milage before changing, like 500K to 750K miles.

Thanks, Mike
