RV park in Durango and Colorado Springs

John, you are going to my favorite place. I like trains, and therefore I stay at the Alpine Rose just out of town heading toward Silverton. There is a ton of stuff to do there and great places to eat. Off roading is great. Rafting also, as well as glider rides etc. The train is a big deal and takes all day. Remember this time of year is thundershowers and it can get real cold. We have seen it snow in late Sept. Have fun we were just this this April and still want to go back.

John,

We would second Jim's recommendation of Alpen Rose RV Park. I like to stay out in the front area, which while not having any big shade trees has more room for big coaches than the spots in the back where the trees are. Be sure and do the train ride as the aspens will be truning colors soon and it will be spectacular.

Another recommendation for Alpine Rose. We stayed there years ago and enjoyed it. Also, they recommended we not take the train ride both ways as it is long and becomes boring doing the "run" twice--up and back as at that time there was no "narration" of the trip. They suggested take the jeep upcountry ride up and take the train back.
Great idea. We lunched up in the mountains and then rode the train back in the afternoon.

Also, careful of which way you arrive. We came in from the north via Ourray, CO and while it is "doable" going up and over the mountains was "work" for the driver--me and somewhat fearsome for my wife even though she was on the "mountain side" of the coach. We passed, in the opposite direction, Greyhound busses and tractor- trailers, so we continued as we left Ourray. It was beautiful, but slow, especially when we got behind house-trailers and 5th wheelers who would not pull off at the areas allowing traffic behind to advance ahead. We on the other hand DID pull off and let cars pass.

Dear John Tanzi; Stay anywhere in Durango BUT Alpen Rose. We stayed there last year celebrating our 37th wedding anniversary and the manager there was the biggest jerk I ever met. He ruined our 37th celebration with his antics and I would never stay there again if it was the last campground in Durango! There are several other nice parks in Durango that know how to treat a customer.
The KOA in Colorado Springs has nice big open sites. We were treated well there and had a great time.

I have been there over a dozen times and have never found the Mgr. to be rude, or a jerk. Which just goes to show "you can please some of the people some of the time but not all the people all of the time".
