Trip Tek

Does anyone have a Trip Tek in their coach? Opinions on the unit? Has anyone installed the unit in their coach? If so, how difficult was it?

I hesitated about replying to your post as I thought someone with a CC might have the Trip Tek computer and would be able to give you some answers that would be more pertinent to your coach as mine is a DSDP.
Probably most coaches don't have the Trip Tek. I do have one in my DSDP and I really like it. I have the model 2000. For the year 2003, they have up graded the Trip Tek to a 2300 model and added some nice features

If you haven't already done so, go to http://www.triptek.net and you can review all the features that the program gives you. I had mine factory installed by Newmar when I ordered my DS so I couldn't tell you if it would be difficult to install yourself.
As far a cost goes, the Newmar list price was $928. I was able to get it discounted for $690 (installed). Could be you could get it cheaper. I suppose the model 2300 would be a little more expensive.

For example, during this cold weather. After turning on the engine block heater, I was able to plot the increase of the engine, intake manifold and transmission temperatures (without starting the engine).
Starting at 20 degrees F. (the temp inside the garage), the engine increased from 20 degrees to 107 degrees over an 8 hour period with the 82 percentile mark (92 degrees) being reached after only 4 hours. I suppose your dash gauge (for engine coolant and transmission) starts at 100 if it's like mine. The Trip Tek gives you those temps from ambient on up (or down) on the "Coach Data Screen".

In a recnet post on "Cummins engines", "rvmike" indicated that his coach would not start in this cold weather and wondered how he would know when the temp reached a level where it was safe to start providing that he could get power to charge the batteries. If his block heater works the same as mine in terms of heating the engine, his coach would be about ready to start (in this weather) in probably about 4 hours (In 4 hours it would be at about its 80 percentile mark of max heating for the given ambient temp). If he had the Trip Tek or something like it, it would give him that information as the engine temp dash gauge won't at those temperatures.
Of course the Trip Tek puts alot of other information of interest at your finger tips.

As I said, I like it and would order it again. I wouldn't mind looking into the possibility of an upgrade to get the newly added features.

Thank You for the info-very informative. I called the company and the new unit with everything is now $925. They told me they only sell direct and one can install it themselves in about 3-4 hrs. They do the install in 1-2 hrs. I was hoping to find someone who had done the installation on a coach. It seems like a good way of incorporating an existing monitor rather than another add-on.
