Intermittent generator shutdown

I have an 8 KW Onan quite diesel generator in my 04 Allure. It has been shutting down intermittently, and sometimes is hard to start. In between it runs and starts well for hours at a time. The display showed an "air in fuel" code.
First, based on others' experiences here, I changed out the supply and return fuel lines. They were not cracked, but the tech said there was a kink in one. Same problem after changing the fuel lines.
I only have 418 hrs on the generator and the fuel filter is not due for a change, and there are no fuel leaks. This problem is happening with plenty of fuel in the tank - over 1/2 tank.

Any ideas or similar experiences?

Sounds like a new filter may cure the problem, you can not always go by the due date! Cheap fix hopefully.

Hi George,

I'd change out the fuel filter first. By the way, do you know that the side panel on your genset is held by 13 screws? If your genset is on a slide, remove the 13 screws, lift out the side panel, and you have access to the fuel and oil filter from above. A lot easier than laying on the ground to service the filters. See enclosed pictures.
I also installed a additional small Racor fuel filter on the exterior of the side panel. That way if that fuel filter gets clogged, it is easier to change out. I took the input fuel line to the genset fuel filter and ran it through the Racor filter first and then back to the genset fuel filter.

Wow, I wish. I think it would take a fork lift to remove my gen. Anyway, nice setup Chuck and Mary.

It is going to take more than a fork lot to remove your generator unless you are willing to cut out a portion of the front grill. It will require some cutting and re-welding of some minor frame pieces and some playing around with the steering link. Even then you can now drop the gen-set straight down but the coach has to be on a lift and some kind of cribbing in place.
It is not a fun project. I have checked it out pretty thoroughly. If you hear of an easier way let me know. I dread the day that my gen-set has to be removed.
For those of you that are wondering what the issue is, the 2004 Allure generator is up front but not on slides.

we had generator problems and took it to a shop that diagnosed bad fuel line, caused intermittent problems. No problems since fuel line replaced. CC did not use fuel grade hose.

Regarding the problem with the fuel line to the Generator. I have a 2004 CC Inspire which would not start this past spring. I had had it serviced in December when we hit the road in April, 2009 and found that it would start but when it took on a load it would stop running. When were passing through Greensboro, NC in July we stopped at Cummins to see what was wrong with it. They found the fuel line had holes in it and had to be replaced. They had to drop the big diesel fuel tank and the propane tank to get to the fuel line feeding the Generator. It cost us $866 with my Cummins Power Club discount. Nothing was mentioned about the wrong fuel line being installed at the factory.
