BATTERY CHARGE

Yahoo Message Number: 56164
I have 6 golf cart Lifeline Batteries in my 2005 Inspire. When fully charged the light will be green, after some usage the light will go to the yellow . If I start my generator charge when the light is yellow the light will go all the way to red.

Does anybody understand why? Is this normal

Stan,

I can tell you that is what my Inspire does, however I can't tell you the why.
Even if the battery panel starts with a green light, if you start the generator the battery panel goes thru an electronic rain dance starting with the red light then amber and ending with a green light after about 3 minutes. I don't think it has much to do with the actual charge on the house batteries.

I have 4 batteries in my 2005 Inspire and it does the same thing as yours.
If the charge indicator is yellow it goes to red after the generator is started.
After about 30 min or so it will go to yellow then after a long time to green.
It stays green after the generator is turned off.
I would like to have a digital voltage readout rather than the three colors of lights.
Does anyone have an idea of what I should get and who sells them?

WHEN I AM FULLY CHARGED I COULD BE AS HIGH AS 14.15 HOW LOW CAN I GO WITHOUT DOING DAMAGE TO MY BATTERIES.

Stan,

The Xantrex starts/restarts the charging cycle automatically every time you cycle/power up the system. This is why the red LEDs illuminate and this is correct and normal. The built in charging computer is checking the battery state and taking the appropriate steps automatically. If the batteries are already charged the LEDs will soon go to yellow and then green if appropriate and when the batteries are sufficiently charged.
The web page reference sent in the most recent message on this is good reading. However, the easy non-technical suggestion I have is to simply make full use of the Xantrex electronic battery charging controls as they are quite sophisticated, do everything automatically and are designed to protect your batteries, all automatically. Simply watch the colored LEDs. Green is OK, keep using your stuff, yellow is telling you they are running down and you need to keep watch until they turn red which means they neeed to be charged. Don't let them be drained past the initial red illumination for very long, start charging immediately and you will be doing a lot to keep proper tabs and care of the batteries. You can't go wrong by just using the system as designed.
Just remember that if you change battery types, such as going from wet cell to AGM, the Xantrex controller must be told this (programmed) so it will work properly to protect that type of battery. Different designs require different charging procedures for maximum longevity and the devices installed in our coaches are fully capable of doing thus.
You might also want to check out the equalizing instructions in the user manual. If you haven't done that process it can extend battery life.

Bob,

Thank You very much for your input. I do not know anything about equalizing, but I will check it out

Bob,

I installed a digital voltage meter on my dash, just above the ignition switch. I added an on-off-on rocker switch below it that lets me choose chassis or house battery voltage. I picked nearby sources for each circuit.
I use this religiously to check when to charge my batteries and, while on the road, to ensure my alternator is charging both sets of batteries. Poor man's Silverleaf.
I don't have my maintenance files with me and am unable to provide the vendor for the meter. The switch was Radio Shack.
