Exhaust extension

The chrome exhaust extension fell off our 2006 Allure (Cummins ISL400 engine). I found a CC replacement for about $140 and decided to keep looking. I mean, it's only about 9 inches of chromed 5" diameter pipe! Then online I found ppmotorhomes.com carries a US Gear extension that they call a 'Chrome Turn Down 5" (Straight)', part number 92-2209, for $62. When it arrived, one end was flared and there was a sturdy pipe clamp included. The exhaust pipe is already flared, so I stuck the new extension into the exhaust pipe straight end first. I pushed it in until about 1/4" protruded beyond the RV body, tightened the clamp down really snug, and it is solidly in place. Yes, there are four small slots around the end of the pipe, but you don't notice them unless you are looking at it closely. I hope this helps someone else!

I need an extension on my '04 Inspire and haven't been able to find one either. Are you saying you put the extension "inside" of the exhaust pipe instead of "outside"? Is the extension 5" inside diameter or outside diameter?

Hi Paul,

Did you install the chrome tip in reverse? Is that what you mean by 4 slots that "are not that noticeable"?? Not interested in spending $140 either.

I went to our local Freightliner dealer and they ordered me a lenght of 5" chrome exhaust pipe. Took it to a machine shop and had them cut it to lenght--which gave me 2 pieces. Cost about $50 and I have a spare. My origianl extention on my '99 Allure was plain steel and rusted-did not like the look so I changed it.

Yes. The engine exhaust pipe already is flared to accept a 5" diameter extension, so I reversed the extension, pushing in its 5" diameter end into the engine exhaust pipe. It fit perfectly. Of course, the flared end of the extension is now sticking out about 1/4". It's flare is not visible, being out of sight behind the RV siding; however, there are four small slots at the end that can be seen if you look closely. It was a simple installation and ok for me. Since the extension is straight on one end and flared on the other, it will fit onto a 5" engine exhaust whether or not the exhaust is flared. Concerning OD vs ID, I made a crude measurement of the engine exhaust pipe diameter, saw it was about 5" and after seeing available sizes of extensions, concluded I could not make a mistake. The only other size anywhere near 5" was 4", which is way too small. If you buy one, cinch that pipe clamp down tight!

Yes, I installed it in reverse. The flare on the engine exhaust pipe was so deep that I was able to insert the extension way in there so that only about 1/4" stuck out beyond the sides of the RV. Then I tightened that pipe clamp so tight it will never fall off. The pipe clamp that comes with the extension is much stronger than the factory clamp.

I recommend you watch the fiberglass around the opening for the exhaust tip. Those slots might permit the escape of (very hot) exhaust inside the opening instead of to the atmosphere outside the opening. Just a thought.
I replaced my exhaust tip (plain rusty steel) with a chrome tip from CC. It was pricey, but it fits and looks good.

Good point; that exhaust has to be very hot. The slots are about 3/4" deep and 1/8" wide, the extension protrudes about 1/4" beyond the RV sides, and there is at least 1/2" between the extension and the nearest fiberglass. Since I already have the extension and it is installed (read no longer returnable), I suppose I should loosen and withdraw it another 1/4", which would hopefully remove any likelihood that the fiberglass would get damaged. Thank you for the alert!

I probably did a no no here but I did it anyway. I was tired of breathing the exhaust fumes while I dug in the back storage bay for the toad connects, etc. plus tired of the black soot around the pipe on the fiberglass eveyday. So I ordered a 5" O.D. turn down. It sticks out the side 5 to 6" and points down and back. I'm probably technically over width now but it looks great and the side stays cleaner. I think the driver in the car on my right rear at a stop light with his window open appreciates not receiving the exhaust blast also.
