Maintenance Question, Wheel Bearings

Looking at our CC maintenance schedule I noticed that rear wheel bearings require cleaning and repacking every 20K miles. Seems like I questioned this a few years ago at a Cummins/Allison facility and they said that it was not required that often. I've talked to several RVer with 100K+ on their rigs and have never had it done. I'm at 80K and have not had that service. I've pretty much kept up with all of the other service. What's the consensus on wheel bearing service intervals. Any idea of the cost. My next service will be in Tucson at the Allison shop.

The rear wheel bearing run in the same gear lube as your differential. Change the diff oil is about the same. The time to inspect the rear bearings is at brake shoe replacement or, if you get a rear seal leak. Have not heard of inspecting the rear bearing running in diff. oil. Maybe I have missed that over the years, would be very low on my inspection worry list. The front are different if packed with grease, then they do need an inspection and repacking. BUT if you are talking a tag axle then they would be the same as the front if grease packed. Pulling the rear bearings at 20k is well, simple not needed. Again a tag would be like the front.

I have an 03 Allure 1st Ave. #30898. The Drive Differential/Rear Wheel Bearings, Front Wheel Bearings and Tag Axle/Tag Wheel Bearings were orignially filled with 85 - 140 Gear Oil. My 1999 Allure was filled with these same Gear Oils, both coaches I purchased new. Here's my actions and information.

1. At 5,000 miles I changed the Differential to Mobil One 85-140 Synthetic Gear Oil
2. At 90,000 miles after talking with several truck shops a talking with oil company lube specialist it was advised to me that dinosauer Gear Oil begins to loose its qualities at 90 to 100K miles
3. I therefore changed my Front Wheel Bearings to 85-140 Synthetic Gear Oil and my Tag as well
4. After talking directly with Meritor techs they told me the recommendation on their Drive Differential even on Synthetic's was 100,000 miles, therefore I changed to new Synthetic.

5. Doing this allows the a good shop to inspect and clean all bearings, bearing races and seals.
