When I figured everything was OK. Wrong, I own a country coach..
going down the road, the engine check lite comes on. Three seconds later, shut down engine lite comes on. Ten seconds later the engine stops. Being an engineer, I think, who set this up. I run the silver leaf in the mode that shows, engine coolent temp, oil pressure, and transmission temp..I can tell when a temp. move 2 degrees. I knew everything was ok but the engine was dead. Two hrs. to get it hooked up and have it towed to cat. Next morning when they put it on the computer they found the bad senser. Now it is right.. We took the code out of the ECM so the level switch is inop.. One should be watching the gages and checking the fluid level. These switches are crap and very hard to find. CC of course had a supplier and guess what, they are out of business. You can get them from Specialities logistics.

Is it possible to somehow bypass that sensor, as a temporary measure, to keep the ECM from shutting the engine down?

Yes, you can have a CAT Tech set the ECM so that it will not automatically shut down the engine when things go wrong. Of course, this means you have to stay awake while driving and manually shut off the engine if required.

Ken here, Retired Cat Tech. Do not run newer Cat engines out of fuel! Warning you can do serious damage as fuel is used to lubracate and Injector failure can occur. I would never allow endusers to have me do this! Ken 99 Allure 30356

I don't need a low fuel sensor to shut off the engine as I get nervous enough when I have less than half a tank. What, I think , I need to worry about is a rapid complete loss of coolant, there may not be an early indication of that except for my white toad turning orange. I believe, all other problems, including low fuel, low oil pressure and overheating have gauges and warning lights that give you info on how things are going.and ample time to shutoff the engine manually.
A faulty sensor shutting off the engine again while in the middle lane of LA's 402 is a bigger worry to me as it threatens my and my wife's life. Saving a life or having to buy a new engine is an easy decision for me.

Ken Here, Thanks for sharing as I agree with you. A friend with SOB was in a high traffic like the 405 during rush hour and had a Drain valve blow off his Air Tank! an alarm sounded and a few seconds the Brake air pressure was lost and the coach lost speed lucky for him he was able to pull off the freeway. Troopers stopped and kept traffic away while he was able to find a plug for his tank! I remember how horrified his wife was. Again if your engine is out of warranty you can have the software changed. I could not sleep at night if I had to do this. Always be safe out there! Ken 99 Allure 30356
