Non-Tag vs Tag

Hi all,

Been watching the tag axle thread. I have a different slant on it to offer. We have owned 3 - 40 ft Allures. The first two did not have a tag and my present 2004 does. My wife never drove the first two but drives the 2004 with tag at least 50% of the time. The added sense of independence having two drivers is priceless for me.
I have a long list of pros and cons but they have all been presented here many times but that is the main reason I am pro tag axle.
One question for Tom. How did you manage to limit your wife to only one bay of quilting material?

I didn't, she also has the closet where the washer dryer is supposed to go full of material. The two rolls of batting go on the top shelf of the closet. What's nice in our coach is we took the computer desk option for the bed room and that is where the sewing machine lives when parked. My iMac and I use the dinette table. By doubling the size of the floor cabinet behind the drivers seat and installing full length drawers I have room for 100's of CD's. The Dvd's go in a wall cabinet behind the drivers seat up agains the ceiling. She has her sewing, I have my computer, we shae the music and cameras. Hasselblads, film Nikons, and digital Nikons. My wife was afraid to drive our 40 non-tag Monoco but she has no problem driving 40 tag Allure.

Don: I couldn't agree more about how a tag drives. We have had two other coaches, an SOB and a 32-foot CC. I wouldn't drive the SOB and occasionally would drive the 32-footer, only on freeways, holding my breath and constantly looking in the rear-view mirror for the next 18-wheeler to come upon me. When that sucker passed I white knuckled the steering wheel until it passed, hanging on for dear life, finally letting out my breath when I saw it's tail-lights. Not fun.
Now, with this 37 Foot Allure (Yes, CC made a wonderful 37 foot with a tag) I drive just about as much as my spouse not only on freeways but two-lane roads, as well.
I don't even notice nor care what is coming up to pass me. I am totally at ease in the driver's seat and find it a great joy to drive. There is no bouncing around and even in some pretty strong winds I can keep it on the road.
I am 5'2" and could not really be classified as a strong-woman but I can handle this Allure with ease and confidence. That is what the tag did for my driving, thank you very much.

I knew the minute I test drove my current coach that there was a big difference in handling over my 40 ft non-tag Allure. It was the first time I had driven a coach that felt like it was equipped to handle the job at hand.
Sometimes I wonder if the average full timer has really thought through what they would do if the sole driver became incapacitated. I did and my solution was to have two drivers. That happened with the addition of a tag axle.
My wife is just a little over 5 ft at 120 lbs. I love to see the expression on the guys at a campground after she backs it in an climbs out of the coach.

I think that I'd have to be in a coma to let my 5'2" wife get behind the wheel! She thinks that a Honda CRV is too long to drive!!!

I am also a "wife" driver....usually 99% of the time. We have a 2006, 40' Allure w tags and the ride is amazing. We have had several class "A" single axel motorhomes (that I was majority driver) and they were all very responsive on the road but, I feel the tag axel takes it a step above.....Going on I-10 So. Cal. through Palm Springs on a day the CHP closed the freeway behind us due to extremely high wind... we had no issues whatsoever with the wind....very secure feeling!!! We also tow a 21 ft Ranger bass boat and have no problem launching on any ramp. We lift the tag and the turning radius is incredible! I have also heard of a lack of storage issue, but we have more storage than I can fill.
............don't forget the heated floors.....to die for. I have never had them before and I would not be without them now!!!

BTW the combo of the tag + the indepent front suspension is great. THe DW was driving at highway speeds and had a front blow out and barely noticed a handling issue and was able to easily pull of the side of the road. Now the damage from the flat on the other hand...(more on our blog)
