Country Coaches are Born to Run -- Planning the Summer Trip

Yahoo Message Number: 68758
Hello Group:

With the unrest in the Arab oil producing nations and with rising temperatures here in Tucson it is time to make the decision about whether to go on our usual five month summer trip or not. My spouse just did the calculations based on what it cost last summer and what it may cost this summer to run the Allure. Here is the result:

5600 miles at a conservative 7 mpg = 800 gallons

@$3.00 = $2400
@$4.00 = $3200
@$5.00 = $4000

We are going!

Hey! These Country Coaches are born to run! There is nothing they hate more than being tied up in the barn all summer.

Exactly! We traveled in 2008 the last time there was a big run-up - the cost of fuel is NOT the biggest cost we have. Staying home is crazy because of fuel prices. You can drive a bit less, stay a bit longer at one place, boondock when you can, eat out less, lots of ways to offset increased fuel costs.
Report today on Fox - a study shows if cost gets to $5/gal many (non RV) drivers will cut back so chances of there being low availability are not great. No reason to stay home - yet.

The last fuel "crisis" did not keep me at home and neither will this summers projected fuel prices. Yep - CC's were born to run and I like to think I was born to drive one!

We're already on the road. We just cut back in other ways. We didn't buy it to have it sit idle. See you down the road! Lonny & Diane

These coaches are born to run.

Now this might not be for everyone, however this works for me.
A few years ago I bought an oil services ETF, and as a result I don't worry much about the price of diesel. If diesel goes up, I pay more at the pump, but get more of a return on the ETF.
So, If you buy the right amount of the oil ETF, diesel price up or down should be close to a "wash" for your finances.

I am curious about the diesel ETF, how do you manage it? Do you sell when the price is up above a certain level so the proceeds offset your diesel purchases? If so, what price level triggers a sell? If you just ride it up and down with the market, how would that offset your diesel costs? Which diesel ETF are you using?

Thanks.

Ray,

Personally, I don't try to time the ETF. What would trigger a sell, might be me selling the coach. What I'm really buying is peace of mind against price fluctuations. I buy about 800 gallons of diesel a year. Right now diesel is selling at over 2 year highs. Also, right now the oil ETFs are trading at over 2 year highs. Somone, already mentioned its like a hedge. If diesel prices go to $6 a gallon, I'm still going to use 800 gallons a year and hopefully be no worse off finanically. As they say: nothing can go wrong, haha.
There are no diesel ETFs that I know about, only ETFs in the oil and gas sector. A lot to choose from, I'm using iez and ieo, but please don't take that as a recommendation. If oil drops big, so might the ETFs.
I don't worry about the Arabs as much as I do our government. We seem to have no energy plan other than, don't drill, don't drill.

I hope this helps, good luck.

We did Ak in 2007. Paid as high as $4.50 for diesel in Canada. Best advice is to keep the Canada miles to a minimum and enjoy the trip. BC, Yukon, Alberta and Alaska are fantastic. Also, Baniff and Jasper are great.

I will depart next week from Melbourne, FL for Pahrump for a Fantasy RV reunion. My children live in Portland Denver and Chicago. Because of the early start I think I will end up in Chicago early enough to have time from there to go to Maine.
The ETF does not make sense unless you sell it. Diesel doubles in price so you pay 800 x 3.00 extra = 2400 more in fuel. In the meantime the ETF goes up in value $2400. If you do nothing and the price goes back to today's level along with the EFT then you have spent $2400 but gained nothing.

Why does buying an energy ETF make sense? Off subject

This whole conversation about ETF's has little to do with keeping my Country coach on the road but I will ring in and perhaps put this idea in perspective as John does below.
I totally agree with John's logic. It does not make sense to buy a Energy ETF to hedge your diesel purchases on your motorhome.
Airlines and gas utilites don't buy ETF's to hedge against rising Fuel costs, they buy a futures contract for fuel to be delivered in the future at a set price. The problem is that if you don't sell or cancel the contract before expiration and delivery you have a massive storage problem. Last I figured, my motorhome will not hold even 1 contract.
P.S. One Gulf Coast Diesel futures contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange is 1,000 U.S. barrels (42,000 gallons).
