Leaving Mid May for South Carolina

We are leaving San Diego in mid May in route to the East Coast. We will probably be in the Carolinas by early June. In California we have the earthquakes which we sorta blow off. Those of you who live in Tornado Alley or close have had a really disastrous few months. Should we be concerned about our time table arriving in the Carolinas or should we reverse our trip and go North East from San Diego to Quebec and then down the East Coast? My wife is very concerned and is trying to get our trip reversed and go NE to Quebec then go south avoid the Tornadoes ?

In the past some of our members have been upset with question like this, but I really feel it is justified for those of you who live in the tornadoes areas to respond. If you ever come to the West , especially beautiful San Diego I will provide you with the most valid information that will make your successful.

I don't know the statistics, but I expect that your risk of five may be higher than your risk of getting hit by a tornado.

Yeah, that line doesn't work on my wife either...
Knowing that God will call us home when he is ready is more effective.
I can't speak to whatever perils may lurk in Canada. Don't they have bears or something?
Just keep your insurance paid, and call ahead to make sure that the places you plan to stay have tornado shelters. Floating casinos are not likely to have one - I know this from experience. I personally would rather sleep through the sirens, but my wife get's me up to go to the shelter anyway.
You should also take the normal precautions, like checking the weather forecast a couple of times a day. Stay ahead of, or behind the storm fronts - who want's to drive through rain anyway? Keep your dish down, and your awnings stowed when heavy storms are projected, or when they sneak up on you.
And hope that your neighbors awning doesn't come loose and bash into your rig.

We left Florida in February and are now in IL. Stops in TX, AR, OK, IA. This has been a very active year for storms. We are now in IL. We watch the weather channel (until it goes out), use www.weather.com and have a "SAME" weather radio that we program when we arrive, look at the atlas and become familiar with the counties around us and locate a building that will be suitable for a storm shelter (usually bathroom or laundry room). We ask the park manager or ranger. We watch the weather a week ahead and either leave before the storm hits or stay where we are until the next stop's weather is better. We did have to go farther west than we wanted on this trip, but was our choice (Glad we did). If a storm comes, we put in the slides until it passes. On www.weather.com there's a graph that shows what states have the most tornadoes during which months and which states have the most. Worth looking at. Each area has something (fires, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes). Just travel smart. Be safe and enjoy the trip! Lonny & Diane

Stan, think about reservations. Summertime is busy at east coast RV parks. May-June will still be pretty chilly up north and school is still in, so finding space might be easier. But it can be pretty hot and humid as you travel south in July and August.
My choice would be southeast early, northeast later - - if you have places to stay.

Ditto on the NOAA weather radio with SAME capability.

I have lived in NC for most of 50 years. This past weekend's 42 tornadoes were a freak occurrence. The local news said the average for the YEAR is 16 in NC. We worry more about hurricane season, especially August and September, but at least with those there is some warning. The temps right now are variable, but for the most part, you will get a few high 70s to mid-80s each week. Water temps at ocean will be in the 70s by mid-May. I'd do the south now, and the north in July-August.

As others have said, the storms so far have been pretty freakish. If you wait until later in the summer hurricane season cranks up and likely will present more danger than tornadoes so I would stay with plan A.
