Need Ideas for trip western part United States

We live in San Diego Ca. Our goal this year was to go to Alaska, but with the fuel cost going straight up I do not think we can afford this trip. We have been up the coast many times but mostly kept on the move, without staying in any one place. Has anyone taken a trip in the western part of the United States and enjoyed spending time in one location doing stuff. ( fishing, boating, hiking, planed activities )

Stan, we do two "longer" trips a year. In April, for the last 8 years, we go to Moab, Ut and spend about 4 weeks. The main reason is to hit the Jeep trails, but there are several national and state parks there to visit also. Arches is our favorite. In September, we go to West Yellowstone, Mt for about the same amount of time. We've been doing this trip for 17 years, the last 6 in our motorhome. This is mainly a fishing trip, but Yellowstone park is there, which we never get tired of visiting. It will be hard for you to replace an Alaska trip, but I understand your reluctance to go with the fuel prices so high. We are planning Alaska next year and sure hope the situation is better. A trip to the Oregon coast and Washington State would include everything you are interested in. In addition, Vancouver Island (west side) will give you some exceptional fishing that time of year. If, for some reason, you would run out of things to do, there is always British Columbia as well. We are from Seattle, and although not heading to the NW this Summer, we would be most happy to make any number of suggestions for you. Best of luck and enjoy the NW should you decide to visit.

Have you tried Ashland Shakespeare Festival? We stay at Talant,a bit north of there, at the American RV Park and drive back and forth in the towd for the shows. Free show every evening before the performances at the three main theatres and lots of little restaurants to browse in. From there we go on over to Florence for a few days in the Marina getting rides with others on their fishing boats. Bakersfield has lots of attractions (Crystal Palace and Basque dinner) and then the Sacramento area is interesting.

I 2nd the trip doing the Oregon Coast, Washington State & Vancouver Island. It will cost you about $500 round trip for the ferry from Vancouver to the Island, but you can easily spend a month or more on the island with lots to see and do. We have fished out of Port McNeil for the past 7 years and the whole island is beyond spectacular. So is the Oregon coast.

The difference between $3 and $5 per gallon is $3000 or $5000 for that trip. If that trip is your goal, bite the bullet and "just do it".
I have done the Alaska trip years ago, but I took the long way, through Atlanta, New Jersey, Toronto, Chicago etc, 17,000 miles.
Everyone should do it at least once, but be sure you have good tires (not to old) and good glass coverage on your insurance.
Allow at least three months for the trip and take your time.
Be prepared for some dry camping. There are many great places to pull to the side of the road for the night, and areas where there are few towns or commercial services.

We stay at emigrant lake when we are visiting Ashland. No freeway noise and a beautiful county park with full hookups. Big rig friendly 50 amp no cable. Open extended summer months. Just a few miles off the freeway. They even take reservations.

In no particular order, map it out on the points that catch your fancy! -Convict Lake
-Lake Tahoe

-Paso Robles (home base from SLO to Morro Bay to the little Castle to Raging point to wine tours, etc.) -Napa (If, the cork has every come out of a bottle of wine for you:)!) -Yosemite - Sequoia
-Red woods on route 1

-Pactrick's Points is great

-Joseph Smith Redwood parks is great...
-Quick run up to Crater Lake in South Oregon is spectactular too
Another thing a friend of ours did, was mapped out major museums. And headed up route 1 and 101 (Getty, Getty Santa Barbara, Presidents Museum, Frank Loyd Wright homes, etc., etc.) They were gone three months, and cut some out of their tour!)
Have fun, and if you hit Napa - bring back a bottle of Silver Oak for your Bay Park neighbor!

We enjoy staying around the wine country of Napa and Sonoma Counties. We love the coast, too. I love to go to the City to check out the Hifi and Camera shops, the Embarcadero, Market Street shops, ride the cable cars, etc. Love the Japanese Guardens, the Zoo, Golden Gate park, have been in the new D. Young Museum or Planetarium, yet. The restaurants are fantastic in the city and over the entire area. If you can afford it, everyone should visit the French Laundry once. We also like the CIA restaurant at the school, near Sterling and Twomey Vineyards. Its fun to visit the winerys, poke around the old mansions. I've been known to attend a symphony concert or two, or even attend a Ballet. I went to school in Santa Rosa, but have lived in West Texas since 1961. So its fun to go back home, visit Snoopy's on Steele Lane, poke around and eat Italian at the Union Hotel in Occidental, have fresh see food at bodega Bay. Marin county has great places to view the sights of the city, and other places of interest. There's a grove of old growth Redwoods a few miles North of the Golden Gate. I use to fish all along the coast with my dad. So visiting the little towns along Hwy 1 and eating at the local greasy spoons returns me to the 60's. If the weather is nice stay at the fair grounds in Sacramento, visit Sutters fort, the Capitol, Old Sacramento and the Best Railroad museum this side of Baltimore. They have a great Jazz festival every year.

You will get plenty of "2nd's and 3rd's" for the Oregon and Washington scenery. Two years ago we spent 2 months just coming north from California on Hwy 101. There is a free magazine that you can pick up as you travel the 101 that is by area which will give you lots of ideas on things to see.
One of our favorite spots was in Oregon at Winchester Bay. The county park there is so nice. If there was a light house within miles, I felt I wanted to see it and climb up in it is at all possible!! Kind of was on my bucket list.
We spent a few days around Salinas - the Salad Bowl of the Country. We also drove out to Monterey. Besides the helpful members of the forum, ask some of the locals and they will give you lots of ideas.
We never had a set plan and just took made a very leisurely trip our of it. The only time I would advise getting reservations is over the 4th of July.

And if you get board you can always sneak across the Nevada border to the worlds biggest small city. RENO. and its companion, Lake Tahoe. TWI 2004 Intrigue 1173. Don't forget Gold country at the foot hills of the Sierras.
