The next Flying J story

DW and I were touring around the Twin Falls, Id area in our toad when we passed the FJ on highway 93. So, I went in and ask if the truck pumps would accept a credit card and loyalty card for an RV, (they do not have RV pumps). The clerk said, "sometimes they do and sometimes they don't." I ask,"what does that mean?" She said, well they sometimes do and sometimes don't and if they don't you can come to the desk and run your card. Which of course I don't want to do with a Penfed Visa card. Just when you think you have heard everything there is another chapter to the story.

Why does everybody insist on going to Flying J when they are not east to deal with, cost more and are a PITA... And do not seem to care if we buy their fuel or not....
Buy fuel where it is cheap and eat in a real restaurant of you so desire.

Could not have said it better myself.
I use GasBuddy to find the cheapest gas. I think Flying J was it once or twice in the past year or two. I usually beat their price.

My response is we got use to fueling at the FJ's they were cleaner than most truck stops, had a place to eat and stretch your legs, at the time they were cheaper. It is hard to find parking for a 40ft MH and a 15ft tow if you are traveling and have never been in the area before, making stopping to eat is a problem. FJ's business model did not work, so now we have P/FJ's with new procedures, some of which we do not like. I think pilot is listening and improving, their credit card with the discount being one of their better ideals! I for one have not experienced a problem dealing with them! If I had as many problem as some express I would probably not be using FJ. You are right in that it is a free country and we can fuel where every we like!

USED to be a good place to stop. That was when they were clean, well run, had a real restaurant, and consistent policies. Since their adoption by Pilot they are expensive, dirty, sublet restaurants if any, inconsistent policies and more. I buy fuel where it is priced best versus convenience. I eat where ever I feel like. Yes it takes a little thought about parking, exiting etc, but not that much. When I tow my stacker I am 85' long and still get into most places.

I quit using FJ when they started these games with us. I also want to use PenFed card and if I use http://autos.msn.com/everyday/gasstations.aspx or gasbuddy.com I can always beat FJ anyway but sometimes have to run the card 3 or even 4 times to fill up if they shut off at $75 or $100.

I was recently at two FlyingJ's and became quite annoyed when my pump start stopped me at $100 twice and then made me go inside. They ended up putting me in touch with FlyingJ Central who said that the pump start will not stop your card if you use the truck lanes. Have not tried it yet.

I just bought fuel today, they charged me the credit price minus the discount even though I used a debit card. Cash means cash! I haven't tried a personal check yet. TWI 2004 intrigue 11731

Credit and Debit cards are charged the same Merchant rate.
Cash is Green, not plastic. Try doing a million in CC/debit transactions at 2%, guess who pays this? The consumer.

I have no idea where you got this information, but Credit Cards and Debit cards are NOT charged the same. Credit Cards are -+ 2% depending on merchant volume, Debit Cards pay a flat fee, typically 25 to 50 cents.

We had the "old" Flying J card and got $0.01 off of Fuel and way back we could fuel at the truck pumps, use a credit card and get the cash price, that changed.
Just got and activated the Pilot/Flying J RV card, called in to get the facts and here is what they told me.
Get $0.02 off of gas, $0.03 off of fuel, and $0.05 off of propane. Still need to fuel at the RV dock to get cash prices using a credit card UNLESS
You need to go to a Flying J or Pilot, see the manager and give them your license and some other information then call Customer Service and they will activate your "Pump Status" and you can get cash prices at the truck lanes using a credit card, need to insert RV card first then the credit card.
Haven't tried this yet but will do on my next fueling at Flying J or Pilot.

We have the newer Pilot/Flying J RV Plus Card. You have to get it through the Good Sam Club website. We get .04 off gas and .06 off diesel. Also you can fuel at the pump without ever going into the building. I really like it and have had no problems using it.
The only down side, if there is one, is that you need to give them access to your bank account and they automatically deduct the amount owed monthly. I didn't care for this part but it's not a big deal really. They give you plenty of notice when and how much the payment will be.

It may depend on whether you go to the back or the rv pumps but I get cash price and 3 cents more off at the rv pump using my credit card.

Barney, you had to give them access to your bank accout because you chose to have the $2500.00 line of credit. If you had chosen the $1000.00 line of credit then you pay your bill electronically yourself and no bank info would have been necessary.

I ditto Barney's input. Signed up for RV Plus card thru Good Sam. NEVER have to go inside. Insert RV card, Visa card, and control number (like password). Receive the .06 discount off cash price for diesel. Comes out of my checking account, Also receive a statement online. Finally something that works!

I have a MasterCard debit/credit card issued by my bank that takes the amount from my checking account either as a debit or as a credit. it is very common these days. The only limit is how much you have in the checking account plus any overdraft protection.

I understand the debit card but why bother having a "credit" card if they're going to take it from your checking account?
I use a VISA card (which by the way gives me 3% back on fuel) and when the card payment is due, I transfer funds from my checking account.
I'm calling Flying J tomorrow to see if i can continue to do it that way.

What did you do with the coach?

Your original question seemed to me to be 'how can a credit card charge appear on one's checking account'? Now you are questioning the wisdom of the subject. You know that could open a can of worms.
Today there is very little difference using the card as a debit or credit card as both charge you checking account immediately. The only slight difference is that some places that do not accept debit cards will accept it as a credit card. Also there is a difference in the charges to the merchant.
Now the truth is that I have both and use the credit card much the same way that you do. So I am not in a position to argue which is better. I will say that in some instances credit cards are considered to be a debt equal to the limit on the card regardless of how much you currently have charged to it. That is because you could within minutes be charged to the full amount of the limit without any question.
Debit/credit cards can only charge to the limit of your checking account balance although some will allow you to tap your overdraft protection. Basically I tend to charge on one or the other based on the type of merchandise that I am purchasing. Others may have different approaches.
Now as to 'what did I do with my coach?' An answer to Smitty as well. After 11 years of full timing my wife and I decided that it was time to hang up the keys so as to speak. We have had, throughout our full timing, 15 acres in the White Mountains of NH. We had a full hook-up site on the land and spent our summers there. So this summer we put a double wide manufactured home on the site and ditched the coach. We moved in the 14th of Oct and already it has been cold (21 degrees the last three nights and yesterday never got above freezing). This morning we woke up to a couple of inches of snow. My wife and I were born and raised in this part of the country so all we have to do is wait for our blood to thicken up again we hope. Truth is that in a lot of ways we have missed New England winters. The new wood stove is out in the living room doing it's thing.
I do not plan to leave the group just yet as I have accumulated quite a wealth of knowledge that I hope to continue to share with everyone. And of course I am always willing to help anyone with trips to the New England states. Come by for a visit if you are in the neighborhood.

We use the RV Plus Card which is a charge card and we get an on line statement. We pay it like any other credit card. We do get 6 cents off the cash price.
