Fantastic Fan Rain Sensors

Our former motorhome's Fantastic fan didn't have a rain sensor; the two in our "new" Intrigue do. I realize that anything can break down ... but can the rain sensors generally be "trusted" to close the lid when it rains?

You betcha!!! In fact, we have found that a few drops of rain will close the fan housings in a few seconds. We had the same setup on our previous coach (a National RV SeaBreeze), and we think the new ones on the 2002 CC Allure are even faster.

Now - the only thing you have to realize is that the things stay "on" - so that whenever the sensors think the rain and moisture is gone, the lids will start to open again (even in the middle of the night). Usually at that point, a drop or two of moisture will hit the sensor again and before the lid opens completely it will close again.

The trick is to remember to check the fan controls if they have closed because of rain - and turn them off until things outside really dry. Otherwise you will hear them trying to open, then close, all night long!

Dick,

The problem I've had is that they close too often. FF told me they work off the dew point. I've had them close when I'm showering. On the last trip they were closing in the morning as it was foggy. In directly answering your question mine have always closed in the rain.

Dick,

I have not had a chance to check the sensors in this rig, but in the previous one, they were so sensitive that in the evening and morning the fans could not be used because of the dew causing them to open-close-open-close--etc.

Yep, the sensors work, but I would not leave them open when I knew it was going to rain just to check them out.

Dick, believe it or not, as I write this, it just started to rain.
The Fantastic fan was running and with just a few drops the fan turned off and shut the cover. We have had it running on several ocassions when it started to rain and it has worked every time.

Mine work each and every time it sprinkles. One of them worked so well it would cycle close and open, close and open. I raised the hatch and cleaned the sensor with soap and water and it works like new. When the sensor gets dirty it becomes overly sensitive. jerry in NM, '00 Magna.

Dick, there is also a rain bypass switch you can push if it is closing because of heavy dew. It then ignores the rain sensor. You must remember to close it after pushing the bypass.

Bill,

I wish my rain bypass switch would over ride the closing feature but it doesn't. All it does is stop the lid from opening all the way, but with dew, rain, etc it closes. Mine won't ignore the rain sensor.
I cleaned the sensor per FF instructions and it is less sensitive, but difficult to keep open in humid climates.

Yes, they certainly do work but too efficiently. I have covered the fan in the bathroom so that I can leave it open if I choose to do so. I believe I will put a cover over the one in the kitchen too as I want to be able to use it if cooking and not on power. Dew and condensation closes the fan and there have been many times when I did want to use it.

The Fantastic Fan rep at the Buffalo, NY, FMCA Convention emphasized that a cover should *not* be placed over a FF, 'cause the reduced air flow can cause premature failure of the fan motor. They had a display setup with streamers to indicate the reduction in air flow. They also said that the FF boss has stated that if it was possible to make a cover for the FF that wouldn't cause a problem ... FF would be making one. Regardless of that statement, and the concerns, I plan to install the covers that have since been introduced by Camco. They open up for easy cleaning and have numerous ventilation slots with no screening. The only thing I'm not sure of, yet, is if there's enough height to allow the FF lid to open fully. I'll be checking this out soon at our local Camping World store. .

The Camco fan covers do not have enough clearance for the lid. The funny shaped Maxxair works fine.

YES, FF has always stated that their fans should not be covered. However, on my previous Bounder which I had for 8 years the Maxxair cover worked fine and I am using the same type cover on my 2000 Allure. No problems yet...h

Concerning your question about the FF vent fully opening with a cover, the answer is No the top cannot fully open. I tried the Max Air cover and did not like the fact that the FF vent was being forced to stop before it was fully open. I have also been told it is not a good idea by FF and others.

We have had a cover on our FF for 3 years without any trouble. We use the cover to vent the coach when it is in storage and when we are not using the ac. If it hurts the fan motor you would never know it.

I put two of the big max air covers(turbo)on and they work fine. We leave it on manual with the rain sensor off. Mine has the cover switch built into the fan specifically for the purpose of manually stopping the lid before it hits the top of the cover. These fans were made to accommodate the covers.
