Camping In Zion National Park

Leaving Moab, Ut. and heading for Bryce and Zion. We had reservations to dry camp in Arches but 18 mile trip and hot weather, put us at the KOA. Wondering if anyone has dry camped in Zion National Park could share route information and experience?

Our next stop is Ten X at the south rim of the Grand Canyon.

Depending on the size of your rig you may want to consider camping outside Zion. If your rig is over a certain size you have to have an excort to take you through the tunnel. Best I remember there were a number of larger rigs in Zion but you have to call ahead and get an escort. There are two entrances but when we were there in 2010 the West entrance was closed and the East entrance got rather crowed.

The Watchman CG in Zion Natl Park is one of the best I have ever experienced. They have spacious water & electric sites to fit all size rigs. The location is fabulous, right at the shuttle depot and park visitor center, and just a mile or so from town. Good vibes there.
The tunnel was no problem for me in my 41 footer with 12 foot height. If you are over 13 feet it could be a problem. Also, you cannot tow through the tunnel so toad must be driven behind your coach. See http://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/the-zion-mount-carmel-tunnel.htm

Thanks for reply. We are now wondering if driving from the West side, from I15, of Zion is worth the travel time since east has tunnel and switch back climb?

We did the trip from Arches to Ten X via Bryce/Zion. I70 to SR24 and stayed at Torrey. SR12 to Bryce then SR89 to SR9 to Springdale. We did not dry camp at Zion. The tunnel is no problem but you will have to unhook and pay about $15. Going down the switch back, beautiful drive and like any other switch back. Just go down it at whatever pace you like.
If I remember correctly, we did not hook the car back up until at the bottom. Came back thru tunnel to get to Ten X. The east entrance has some great sights along that drive.

Hi Paul, In 2008 Linda and I took the tunnel route with Linda leading and spotting traffic ahead on the walkie-talkie. The tunnel was no problem.
