Oil in Air Filter

Hi Folks,

The filter removed today is the 2nd replacement filter or 3 total. The coach is almost 13 years old. About 1/3 of the inside of the filter was impregnated with engine oil and the inlet at the top of the filter enclosure was damp with engine oil. The bottom of the filter had an oil deposit. The filter paper element had very little dust deposit on the exterior. The pressure differential filter gauge read 14 (indicating very little back pressure). A 25 indication means filter replacement is necessary.
My guess is the use of the pak brake over 82,000 miles allowed for migration of engine oil through the air inlet plumbing, intercooler, and turbo.

Hi Folks,

Leonard, 97 Magna, responded with a more plausible explanation as just above the filter where the piping goes to the turbo, a smaller pipe Ts into it and goes to the compressor. Leonard further states that Cummins has had problems with oil back feed. Will be contacting them on this issue.

Can't help you regarding oil but what is your secret on having such a clean filter? I have to change mine at the least every 2 years and more often yearly and in many cases it should have been changed earlier. This does not count the multiple times I've used the air hose to gently blow off the bulk of the debris. The amount of dust that comes out is astonishing and scary. I avoid dirt roads like the plague with the exception of our trip to Alaska. I have never seen my pressure gauge even come off its peg and I suspect its not working or maybe it will indicate when I have 5 lbs of dirt. I have 130K on my 10 year old coach and 8 filters.

Hi Ed, My air filter also requires changing every 9-12k with tons of dust, dirt and bug body parts. Are on the way back from our 3rd Alaska trip, spent the summer, and are on our way to HWH now for a review of our room extensions and some leaking swedges on hoses at the equalizing cylinder. As a side bar, I read an article once that said to never 'clean' the air filter as the accumulated dust actually improves the filtering capability. Filter status indicators are notoriously unreliable. Mine has never budged off of the low position. In testing it, I can suck it down very easily by mouth. Maybe our coaches have such large filters that they don't restrict very easily? My sob seemed to indicate dirt rather easily.

Dave,

My indicator is like yours. (can move it easily by mouth but doesn't move on the coach) I just started thinking about it and the only explanation could be there is no vacuum ever being generated in the filter housing. I think I'll check mine out and make sure there are no leaks or holes in the housing or check that the filters aren't improperly installed which would prevent it from building a vacuum and/or allow dirt to get by the filter in either case.
