Air Dryer Purging Constantly

The purge valve on my air dryer purges once the air pressure gets up to governor cut-off, but then keeps purging constantly for 20 minutes of more sometimes. Today I figured I'd change the filter because I don't think the PO ever changed it out. After installing new filter, the purging continued. I ordered a new purge valve from NAPA which I will install tomorrow. If that doesn't work, I'm out of ideas. Has anyone else ever had this issue?

The purge valve is controlled by the air compressor governor. Make sure it is cutting in at 90# and out at 120#. If it is not working correct it can keep the purge valve open.

Gary,

I have seen this a few times, there could be a excessive amount of water in the filter, this could cause the pop off vulvae to become sticky.if its been more than three to five year since its been serviced it could be time.
If this happens and it doesn't close pump the brakes to bleed the air down and then start the engine run it on high idle tel the pressure rebuilds that should reset it. hope this helps

Well, with new dessicant filter and purge valve assembly installed, it is still purging too much. It sounds fine while the compressor is filling the receiver tanks, then purges once at the point where I think the governor is cutting off the compressor. Then about 3 minutes later it begins a constant 'chattering' sort of purge, as if it is not being allowed to fully seat. What should I look for next? An issue with the governor, as in not cutting out as it should? I assume it is functioning correctly when the pressure stops building at around 120 psi. Is there another indication of proper governor functionality that I should be looking for?
