Another informal survey, what brand/model number did you select?

After some measuring, I find I need a unit with the freezer on top (or a much taller wife....).

Has anyone found a unit other than the Samsung?

Hi Denis,

Curious what brought you to this conclusion?
There are probably a number of refrigerators that will work but might require some expensive cabinet work. Bottom freezers seem to be in vogue these days.

I have been looking at the Frigidaire 16.5 cu ft Top Freezer, Stainless which is also an Energy Star Unit, Model FFHT1725PS. Has an optional ice maker. Power use is low also comparative speaking to some others. The issue is the 12 inch platform it sits on. The 16.5 is only an inch or so higher than the Norcold which works better, for my wife, than the Samsung going to the ceiling. Check it out through Sears or Lowes. Nice unit ! Ned Herrmann

Ned, will this unit be to deep for your cabinet?

Ned,

Here are the measurements for the Norcold. Your depth for the cutout is 24". The width of the unit is just under 33".

Enclosure Cut-Out Dimensions

Height Width Depth Interior Volume 63-1/4": 160.7 cm 32-11/16": 83 cm 24": 61 cm 12 cu.ft.: .34 cu.m.
The Frigidaire unit you are looking at is almost 30" deep without the handle, but is only 29" wide. If you don't want to go to the bottom freezer, french door models, I would look at side by side counter depth models. They are a little more expensive, but your savings in cabinet remodelling might make up the difference.
We went with a larger Samsung French Door and gave up the two drawers under the Norcold, but the cabinet depth is perfect for the space allowed by CC. The other plus is with two doors to open, you are able to open the fridge doors completely. Just a thought.

Barney:

If we leave the drawer intact like this example (we want to keep that storage...) http://www.moenracing.com/samsung/
The (bottom of the) top shelf is about 6' off the finish floor.
My wife is 5'-4" (also off the finish floor).
I am a foot taller at 6'-4", but a bottom freezer seems to put the refrigerator shelves (the thing we use the most) too high for comfort (and safe use).

Denis

PS. Any of this requires some expensive work, but is WAY cheaper than a replacement spouse.

Hi Denis,

If it's any help we have a similar situation except I am only 5'11". Because the Samsung is so much larger than the Norcold was (50% larger) we rarely use the top shelf. We only store things there that we won't need often, then I can get them for her if needed. There is more than enough room in the doors and bottom shelves to store what we need. Hasn't been a problem for us. I've talked with a few folks that also have a small foldable step stool they use. Not perfect but it works.

Have you had a chance to see one of these installed in person?

Hope this helps a little.

PS. I have to agree with you regarding the replacement spouse. Been there, won't do that again!

Hi,

We are of the same mind, Barney. The top shelf hasn't seemed necessary so far. Good discussion.

I have not had the opportunity to see one installed (we must travel in CC-lite zones)and I can't even find one at a local retailer...(not alot of call for counter depth refrigerators in the San Diego area I guess) but we are on the move soon, so there is hope.
This is not an emergent need (fortunately) and I wanted to look at all the options before I was forced to make a choice. I have to admit that we would welcome a larger fridge and freezer.

Thanks for sharing.

We use the top self of the Samsung for my drinks. The lower freezer is a godsend as we use it a lot and it is so much bigger. We love this setup!
