PSW Inverter options + battery temp sensor

Yahoo Message Number: 87042
Our inverter and charger are running well, like and understand the RC7 remote panel.
I'm checking options on providing pure sine wave to critical outlets. Easy way is to swap everything out, leaning towards Magnum 2800PSW, and new remote and new generator start... $$, as it should be, is a factor.
Another option is to add a battery temp sensor to the older Xantrex, can still get them. And then either add a smaller 2nd PSW inverter and feed the outlet lines I'm interested in from this. Of course thru the normal fuse panel.
Or, just get an even smaller PSW and feed this from a dedicated 12v supply. I would use this inverter for PC's, and Stereo components I'm trying to protect the most.
Wondering if some of you have added the temp sensor for more efficient charging? And if some of you have gone with smaller PSW for specific power needs? A smaller inverter would drain less power from the house batteries, as a side bonus(?).
Sorry this reads so fragmented - but my thoughts have been so too:)! Smitty

Smitty,

Have a look at a Victron Phoenix Inverter charger, I have 2 3kw with 100amps charge each in parallel on my boat with 10 6volt 300 amp lifeline AGM's for several years and when I bought the RV in 2011 I replaced the Xantrex Freedom with a Victron unit when it started playing up. One of the great things is power assist, so you dial up the shore side amps and the inverter supplements the shore side to match the coach demand, seamlessly, even so a computer keeps running even if shore side goes off!
I like the ability to create a specific charging algorithm with the PC based software, with this I was able to take Justins specific lifeline charging characteristics and key them in.
We do not dry camp like we used to anchor so my requirements on the coach are not high in that area, but the flexibility is worth investigation.

Smitty,

My '04 Allure came from the factory with the temp sensor. It was glued onto one of the batteries and located between the two 8Ds. You may have lost it when you made your battery change out. I would definitely add it. The charge voltage is significantly different from hot to cold and makes a real difference in charge time when boondocking. You are right to like your RC7GS. I miss some of the features that are missing in my Magna.
I would absolutely not add to the complexity of my systems by adding an additional inverter. If you have a need for pure syn wave power I would take the route you mention with the Magnum product line. System complexity is not your friend.

I have switched to the Magnum 2800 and am unaware of any features that I lost in the switch from Xantrex. I did gain improved tech support and parts availability. I also have a much higher rated charging system.

Dan,

What my note says is that when I sold my Allure I lost the RC7GS and that I miss the features of that device in my Magna which does not have that controller. It goes on to recommend the Magnum product line.

I appreciated the PM's and input. I'm going to go trace wires out of the charger, and see if I may have a temp sensor buried somewhere that I missed.
We are hoping to head out mid May for our first ever trip of over three months. I've decided to not do a major change now, where rookies mistakes by me, or new equipment gremlins, could cause us problems while on this trip.
I'll pick up a smaller 300W PSW inverter and place it in the living area (DW acceptance factor does come into play here:)!). I can use this for computer and stereo power feeds for this trip. My BIL says he would then like to buy it from me for his fishing boat... So not too bad of a compromise to cover the near term needs.
I've had the Magnum 2800 PSW on my master list for sometime now. But will do a final research before buying in the future. And as noted, it ripples when you change out the inverter, to the Control Panel and auto generator start modules too... And I do like the RG7 features, and 'think' I understand how to use them too:)! Thus my question about adding separate installed PSW to feed just a few circuits.

Thanks to all again...

Smitty,

Look for a yellow phone wire running from your inverter/charger to the batteries. Phone jack in I/C temp sensor at batteries.

Again, what features do you give up by going with the Magnum? You do have to have the remote monitors and new control panel but I still don't know what I lost when I switched over.

Hi Dan,

Not so much losing features, as just the PITA of installing and learning a new system when I'm on the back end of the curve on the current system.
I really have no problem with the current inverter minus needing a few PSW outlets, thus I was thinking a stand alone smaller PSW feeding a few of the circuit breakers to the outlets I'm interested in, would be less expensive and effort to install then the full new Magnum and related options.
While it is anti KISS, it is also adds a degree of redundancy, in case one inverter goes out.
The charging features of a newer system, may provide more appropriate charging programs for our specific house bank. But, I hope to have a solar panel solution to cover the bulk of the house charging needs.
Going to get the smaller PSW for the upcoming trip, and simmer on this for a few months... By then the "Self Installing Flux Capacitor" should be on the market:)!

Xantrex true sine-wave we use in buses also keep with demand while on 30amps or lower. We all know a lot of motorbike technology came from the boating and home sector.
