Calibrating HWH Leveling

Yahoo Message Number: 87078
I need to adjust the HWH Leveling System in my coach, as when level according to the system, the front of the coach is low when verified with a level.
I located a HWH control box in the front drivers side electronics bay. It is app. 12" x 8" in size, has a glass front, and lots of green and red lights. It is marked "HWH AP 30202".

I cannot see the adjustment screws.
Am I looking at the right component? If yes, do I need to remove the cover to see the adjustment screws?

"do I need to remove the cover to see the adjustment screws?"
No, look on the side of the box and you'll see where you can adjust the pitch with a screw driver and rhe roll with a deep socket.

Phil,

The adjuster is on the far side of the box opposite the door. Reach around behind and you will feel it toward the bottom edge. The adjuster is very sensitive so make very small changes. if you don't have the instructions from HWH I suggest you go to their site and download them.

Thanks Barney and Jim. The adjustment screws were on the side of the box away from the bay door, neatly tucked behind a big bundle of wires. Simple adjustment with a 5/16" wrench and a philips screwdriver once I found them. Many thanks!

That is the correct box and the adjustment knobs are on the outside; mine are black with spring tensioners on the front. There are two for front/back and left/right. Look around the area in the box where the green lights are (indicating level). When you adjust, you will see the green lights go out.

Phil - We have a similar setup on our bus and also experienced the canted floor plan and swinging shower door. There's a sensor board within the control box you're speaking about. ( http://muniac.smugmug.com/Travel/Country-Coach-2006-430-Allure/i-vpczP9J/0/M/IMG_0641-M.jpg ) Removing the cover may or may not be required to facilitate the adjustment. The sensor board has a small level sensor within it with four LED lights. When all four lights are out the sensor is level. I think a lit LED indicates "high" but not sure as it's been a while. To adjust the board's (and level sensor) position with respect to the frame there's an articulated joint holding the sensor board to the control box. On our bus accessing the adjustment screws is from behind (go figure). You can use an inspection mirror to see it. I think there's a 5/16" nut (for left/right) and another size (front/back) that escapes me at the moment to allow nudging the board front/back and left/right. I made a small calibration level plate from spirit levels that I put on the floor in a strategic spot. Using the manual controls on the HWH, I level the bus according to my floor leveling gauge (not the HWH). When the floor is level (based on gauge) I adjust the sensor board so all the lights go out. This puts the board in proper position to "see" true leveling. I've found the sensor board's mounting is subject to vibration and will fall out of calibration. I added a stiff rubber washer in there (needed to remove cover for this) which seems to tightened the mount while allowing it not to shift with vibration. I haven't had to adjust it in 4 years. That's the scene around here anyway. Hope it helps.

Hi Scott,

We're dealing with the same thing, and your info here is a great help. Would you please explain what a small calibration level plate is? Thank you. You purchased this from Spirit Levels?
Where are you two now? Staying put where you are or moving on shortly? We're on our way home from a nice time in southern FL and didn't think we'd be going home to snow and all that goes along with that, but that's MN now and then.

Mary - I cut a 4"x4"x1/8" piece of 5052 aluminum plate. Installed four rubber feet on it so it sits perfectly level. I then put two small spirit levels on the plate at 90 degrees. These give leveling information in two directions at right angles. Works great for a quick and dirty level reading. A much simpler approach would be to buy a small 6" carpenter or mason level. Place this on the floor and level front/back. Rotate the level 90 degrees and level left/right. Recheck and re-level until it's correct. Adjust the sensor board to agree. I'd imagine a Camping World type place might have trailer and/or 5th wheel levels that would work. The idea is to get a good average reading.
Many ways to accomplish this. Spanning a distance with your level would help. Taking various readings around the bus would help. When the day is done, close is good enough. Our shower door is a great "out of level" indicator. It sees that condition before us. Left over water in the sinks is also good as are cooking pans. Stay straight!

We're in St. George, UT now and will be heading to Torrey (May 1) with continuing service to Montrose, CO.

When we first bought are coach we felt it level low on the front left corner. So we had Chris Snyder adjust the HWH system. He used a 6' level and leveled the coach with the level being placed just in front of the refer. After he was finished I procured a 3' carpenters level and checked the entry area between the pilot and co-pilot to confirm it was level when the center of the coach was level. As we don't like to leave the leveling system on and as there is room for slight deviation from level in the system, as tires cool and the ground compacts, I used the 3 ft level every morning to confirm being level. After a few years of this regimen I can feel when things aren't right. But I use the level to balance the coach as the HWH system can give different results depending the way you level:, top down, bottom up. or from the travel position. I prefer top down as it tends to resist rocking of the suspension.
