House Battery Goes dead

Yahoo Message Number: 87478
I just replaced our house battery and it keeps draining down. Nothing is on in the coach. I've turned the inverter off. We're dry camping on Ocracoke Island NC I got up last night and the battery was dead. I had to wait until 8am to start the engine and then start the gen.
Anyone have any ideas about what's going on? Thanks, John 03 Allure 30951

Hi all,
If there's any chance any of you have experienced this problem, we'd greatly appreciate knowing how you solved it. Mike has gone through every single document in our black box from CC, and not a bit of info. We've googled the names on the mattress itself with no luck. Thank you.

Sounds like your battery is bad. It won't take and hold a charge.

Probably your "Echo Charger" is bad.....easy to replace. Just two screws and hook up the plug in on the wiring harness. The echo charger is located near you Chasis batteries usually. Check to see if there is a light on the box or not....

Make sure the valve is completely closed after you fill it. We found that we weren't closing it until it clicked.
Our mattress developed a leak and we replaced the entire mattress. Ours was an Air Dream mattress. They do make a replacement air chamber if the rest of the mattress is ok.

Thanks, Diane and Lonny! For sure we'll be checking this out the next time we use it, but first I'm going to see if the site you gave us below will work of our couch. Thank you again!!!

Echo chargers do fail. Check voltage after a long drive so batteries should be charged.
I replaced mine with a Magnum Smart Battery Combiner which I believe is better quality and charges slightly higher.

John, when you say house "battery", do you mean the bank of house batteries? I would be surprised if you only have one.
Did you replace the entire bank of batteries, or just one of them (or two)? One bad battery in the bank and they all go flat.
The echo charger should have no effect on the charge of a good bank of house batteries - - it charges the chassis battery(ies) - - unless it is shorting to ground. That should blow a fuse.

John,

Goes the Magnum fit fairly close to the foorprint of the Echo..in terms of mounting and wireing? Do you have a web site for the purchase? Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

I'm not John but I have installed the Magnum Battery Combiner in place of my Echo Charger.
Amazon.com: Magnum Energy ME-SBC Smart Battery Combiner, Auto-Detect 12 or...
The wiring is identical and the footprint is close enough. It is a more powerful device as the parameters are adjustable and you can use it to control the combiner solenoid if you wish.
That said, your problem is not likely to be the Echo Charger. The purpose of the EC is to charge the chassis battery from the house battery when it(house) is at 13 volts or higher. The EC shuts down below 13 volts precisely so it won't drain the house battery. I can't envision an EC failure mode where the chassis battery is fine but the house is dead.

Good luck.

Hi George,

Sorry about the name confusion, but MY Echo's LED doesn't light up at all. I've check the connections and fuses...all look good. I've just bought this unit, and have had it plugged in or driving enough, that neither the House or Chassis batteries have failed yet. I can only assume IT is bad, and want to do something now to prevent issues in the future.
Thanks for the web site.

The Magnum Battery Combiner is suppose to charge from the alternator to the House Batteries while driving or from the Inverter to the Chasis Battery when when plugged into to shore power. I think the same for the Echo Charger.
"©2009 Magnum Energy Inc. 12 Operation Table 3-2, Battery Combining Operation 4.0 Limitations of Throughput The ME-SBC TM can allow charge currents from either battery to flow through to the other battery (i.e.Main Battery to Auxiliary Battery or Auxiliary Battery to the Main Battery)." quote from the ME-SBC manual.

John,

You're right about the Magnum battery combiner going both ways. The Echo Charger only goes one way.....from house to chassis. Also, there is no need or benefit in our applications to go from chassis to house. The Country Coach chassis has a solenoid that combines the batteries whenever the ignition is on and there is adequate engine oil pressure to the pressure switch. This allows the alternator to charge both banks at the same time.
The Magnum battery combiner will also control that solenoid if one wishes that function and wires for it. It seems to be a great product.
