Modified Sine Wave Inverter with Samsung 197

Yahoo Message Number: 90352
I am fairly certain that the inverter in my 2004 Intrigue (mfg July 2003) has a modified sine wave rather than the pure sine wave inverter. I am considering replacing the Norcold with the latest Samsung 197 electric refrigerator. Does anyone know if the new Samsung will work with the existing inverter or will I need to upgrade to the pure sine wave unit? Thank you for any advice.

What I have heard from Bob Vincent and Jim Cooley is the Sam Sung will work very well with the modified sine wave unit with out over heating or voiding the warranty. They have asked other manufacturers and the last I heard was they hadn't received definitive answers. But that was early Spring when I had Chris Snyder install the Amish new cooling unit to my Norcold, as I prefer to be able to dry camp using propane rather than run down batteries.

There are other advantages to pure sine wave. My wife likes the fact that she can have an electric blanket. With a 2004 Coach you may be approaching the life for your inverter. I had to replace my an I have a 2006.

We full time and have been running the Samsung 197 on MSW for six months, with no problems. If and when the MSW inverter gives up we will replace it with a PSW inverter, not before.

I installed the Samsung in our 2005 Inspire. It works great off the inverter that came with the coach. I assume my inverter is the modified sine wave inverter.

Thank you all for your responses. You have provided me with great relief for a nagging issue that could have complicated the installation.

The truth is that the Samsung 197 warranty is voided if you are using a MSW inverter. The manufacturer requires a PSW inverter. (Magnum PSW costs just over $2K). The problem is not operating the compressor (it will run OK) but the ice maker, electronics, etc. may not.

Once the Samsung is installed in a mobile unit, (including RV's of course) the warranty is voided. I've been thru this as we originally were able to sell an extended warranty thru Samsung, then once the rep came to meet me and found out we install them in RV's he told us this and insisted we stop selling them, refund the customer and let everyone know that there is no warranty from Samsung once installed in a mobile unit. But, he also told us that if the customer pulled the refer out and put it in the garage for service then it would be covered, but if the service tech showed up and it was in the coach it's not supposed to be covered.
So bottom line is if you have an issue and call for service under warranty, depending on the tech, it might get covered if he or she is in a giving mood that day, but according to Samsung it shouldn't be and should be red flagged in their system as a mobile installation.

Jim,

You commented about the Fischer Paykel model on a recent post, I did PM you for some info on the specific FP model but did not hear back, however for the group interest do they, Fischers, restrict their warranty in respect of mobile installations?

Michael,

Good question..... My contact person from our distributor is off on vacation thru the end of August, obviously I can still order while he's out, but getting specific questions answered such as this one about the warranty I'll need to talk to him. My gut tells me no warranty same as others, but I will ask when he get's back!

Thanks,

Jim Lewis

Well I have been having problems with my Not-So-Cold so I ordered my 197 Samsung from Best Buy while they are on sale, will take a month to get. After reading all of this about the MSW inverter in these coaches I will be ordering the Magnum 2812 and the ME-RC50 Remote all with Free Shipping. Doing it right the first time may cost less down the road.

Samsung works fine on a MSW Inverter. See post by Jim Lewis about warranty which indicates the warranty is invalid in mobile use.

If what Jim said is true in all cases then that is just more reason to switch out the inverter. I have the same inverter in my 03 Alpenlite 5er and it caught on fire. Lost all power on the 110 side just one more reason to do the switch to the Magnum.

D Jean,

So I'm curious, where did you find or see that the warranty is voided when using a MSW inverter? I've gone over this now for over 2 years dealing with Samsung and I have never heard or seen anything about inverter power from them as part of the warranty. I've had in-depth conversations with my rep and the only issue has been because we put them in a mobile unit, even thou non-commercial. What I can say is that I've got roughly 25 coaches with MSW inverters running Samsung refers (as well as lot's of bus conversions using household refrigerators with MSW inverters). As of today I've not had 1 issue, either from an inverter or from a refer. Of course a PSW is better and well worth the money, going to a magnum is even better IMO. One thing I know is the Samsung doesn't sound any different when running on MSW like a microwave does, or my ARB portable refer/freezer does.

As for the inverter catching fire.... Odd... Yes it can happen, but not something you see or hear about very often.

There is a great lock somewhere on this forum that you can make yourself. It consist of a small piece of plywood and a piece of felt. If you can't find it let me know and I will take a pic and send you directions.

We use that lock on our Samsung. Make sure the plywood is heavy enough to stand some stress. As insurance, we put the foot stool from the recliner between the freezer drawer and the opposing slide wall.

Same here - and Sharon is right to be sure and use plywood heavy enough. Our first one wasn't, and now we have the correct weight of plywood. Works great -- easy to get out and put back in. Great idea to whomever came up with it!

I'm sure someone else will be able to describe this better, but it's in the shape of a horseshoe with straight lines and fits between the two top handles and then is long enough to keep the freezer door closed too and is made out of plywood.

I made mine from a chopping/cutting board from Wal-Mart. Its made of what appears to be Teflon and is about 1/2" thick. Get one about 14" X 20" and cut a chunk out of the center approx. 6"X 14" inches leaving a "U" or horseshoe shape. It is plenty strong and soft enough not to damage the SS on the doors. I then drilled two holes in the top corners and installed two matching screws in the front face of the rear wall of the dining room slide. When camped, I hang the lock on those screws out of the way.
Much better than the flimsy lock provided to secure the freezer drawer and just one piece to deal with for both fridge doors and freezer drawer.
