Verizon Jetpack

Just a follow up. We purchased the Verizon JP for $100 and also 1 month of prepaid bandwidth (3g for $60). I opted for this because I didn't want to get locked into a $1200 contract with a device whose performance was unknown in our network space. I also didn't want Verizon to leverage our cell phone bill/service against any disputes that might arise. Been down this road before. So I questioned the sales rep carefully about all this to include concerns about extended network performance. The device for the prepaid and postpaid options is the same. To order the device took some 3 hours on the phone and about 12 different people. Needless to say it was frustrating. We've been Verizon customers for many years too. That aspect didn't seem to matter.

Anyway, the device came via FedEx in a couple of days. Hooked it up and was unable to get onto the internet. Spend another 2 hours on the phone with Verizon before finally getting someone that actually knows what's going on. It turns out that Verizon disables connectivity on extended networks with the prepaid plan. An interesting business decision. It also turns out the sales rep(s) misrepresented the device's capabilities as I had specifically detailed our extended network situation. BTW, our Verizon cell phones work fine here. They have also worked fine on other extended networks.

So now Verizon wants a $35 restocking fee (over 30% which is unreasonable) for sending us something that was known in advance wouldn't work. That's the story as of late. We're now dealing with the return merchandise issues which hopefully don't get unreasonable. It's amazing what a PITA it is to be a paying customer. All we wanted was accurate information from the seller. Instead, a horrific experience was had to say the least. Just a heads up to those wanting to use a prepaid plan on extended networks. Buyer be ware. My thinking is Verizon railroads folks into more lucrative accounts (2 years and $1200) as a result of disabling a less expensive "pay as you go" service. The prepay was about $170 upfront to include a month of bandwidth with the option to refresh service as required. No lengthy contracts to wade through either.

It's also sad that Verizon doesn't provide some evaluation period so the paying customer can make sure connectivity and speed are acceptable. Or at least a small grace period to get connected. Better yet would be to just let the customer know the prepaid plan won't work on an extended network before the money is spent. The cell towers here are controlled by AT&T. Again many thanks to everyone that provided information about the JetPack. I had no idea the money on the postpaid plan was going to be greener. Something to keep in mind moving forward, perhaps.

This is one of many threads on the JetPack (4260 in this example) from Millenicom. This thread covers some problems, that so far we have escaped with our limited usage to date.
This is on Verizon network. No contract. Can turn off/on monthly depending upon need. 20GB at $69 per month.
I'm going to go out as is and use it on a trip in September. If I experience the problems that others have been having, then the UML290 is not that much of investment to provide stability - I'll just move the SIM over.
I posted this, and the link (and encourage a search on this boards forum for both JetPack and Millenicom - as a source of I thought good info. For those of you that have never read his reviews, Jack Mayer does a good job of real world tests on several fronts.

We're going to Millenicom when our Verizon contract expires in 3/2014
