Reefer Questions (again)

Yahoo Message Number: 91741
My apologies if this is a dupe, having trouble sending a message on this new yahoo format . . .

This has been beaten to death, but I am lost on the option for a new reefer. Samsung or Pine Unit? We dry camp, we travel long distances. I have an '06 Inspire. Sorry folks, still confused on this but need to make a move and ditch the Norcold. I am leaning to the Pines unit, but . . .
1. Samsung, Travel with the inverter on? Never done this in the past. any down issues?
2. Do I have to change my inverter from stock (saw many discussion on sin wave stuff . . . all magic to me). Some say yes, others say no.
3. How do I manage the draw down at night (no genset) on the Samsung?
4. I am assuming (always a bad move . . .) the Samsung is better built and cools better (?) Installation of the Samsung seems easier and more folks familiar with the procedure(?)
Instal I
Appreciate your patience on this.

Lon,

I will try to answer most of your questions. Inverter on the road? Sure. No downside. Change your inverter. Probably not but I don't know what inverter you have. The Samsung will operate fine on a MSW inverter. The issue is battery draw down. If you have two 8D house batteries you should be fine. Dry camping at night: that depends on what else you have on. If everything is off then one night should be ok. I think you could even turn the refer off at the breaker panel and things should stay cold overnight. Just don't open the doors. Installation--can't answer that without seeing your coach. The Norcold box will accommodate the Samsung but there may be issues about getting it into the coach and if your Norcold is in a hallway that could be an issue. Take lots of measurements and then do it again. If you do not feel competent to do the install yourself then find someone who has done it and let then look at your coach before you buy the Samsung. Once done you will love it!! And, yes it will cool and freeze much, much better than the Norcold.

Hi Lon,

We have an 07 Inspire and I installed a Samsung in it a year ago July. It's been working well since, even during our 2 1/2 month trip to Alaska!
Just leave the inverter on and you will be covered if shore or generator power is not available. Very easy, the engine alternator will keep the batteries charged when it's running. The Samsung only pulls about 120 watts (1 amp) while running, easily handled by a 2,000 watt inverter.
I've received notes from a number of members using the MSW inverter without problems.
We had to dry camp a few times on our trip mentioned above. Used the generator to charge the batteries in the early evening. We would go more than 13 hours before starting the engine to travel to out next location. Plenty of battery left. We have 4-6 volts batteries, nothing special.

I have some info that you might find helpful; http://www.moenracing.com/samsung/
You'll wonder why you didn't do this sooner! Constant temps, separate controls for fridge and freezer, 50% more room and no more frost!! There is no downside to this.

If you dry camp a lot, the Pines unit is the way to go, end of story. Unless you like to run your generator a lot, of course.
