No engine start with the key

Hi folks,

I'm cruising for some collective knowledge.

Today I tried starting the coach and nothing happened. I left the key switch on and went to the fuel filter bay, hit the start button back there and the 350 ISC roared to life just like normal.

Could it all of a sudden be a bad ignition switch or should I suspect something else? Is there, possibly, a relay between the switch and the starter that could be the culprit?

This doesn't leave me stranded but it'll be a little unhandy til I can get it sorted out.

Battery voltage level is up to snuff so that's not the issue.

Any help will help. Thanks.

Dave,

There is a starter solenoid back in the engine compartment that can act like that. Mine was doing that and I changed it out and had no problem for a couple months then it did it again. There is a inline 30A fuse between the starter and the solenoid and I went to check the fuse and it was corroded so I replaced it and no more problems.

There is a solenoid in the compartment in front of the passenger seat that will also cause the dash lights to come on. Turn the key on and off a few times and listen for a click. Have someone hold the key to on and hit the solenoid with a large screw driver . It may come to life, but will need to be replaced.

Some follow-up...............

I thought it might be more than coincidental that we had just been home 1 week after several weeks on the road with the last 2 days driving thru 800 miles of non stop rain.

The problem with the key not being able to start the engine, but the starter button in the fuel filter bay would, was this:

There is a solenoid type relay mounted on the outside of the rear wall of the fuel filter bay. Just below the P/S tail lights. Must've had some moisture intrusion. That relay supplies the starter solenoid with power via a nice big #6 AWG cable. I never knew it was there.

A couple of sharp raps on the relay with a hammer handle, and she started right up with the ignition key.

Dave,

When using impact correction on an electrical device, you cannot call it or use a hammer. In hi tech applications like this you have to use a hand held momentary impact device.

Dave, it is likely the Pre-Start Solenoid located as you describe, it is a White-Rogers Part #120-107112, I purchased mine from GSIstore.com about $22.00
