Air Cleaner Element

Hi All, I am contemplating replacing the paper air filter on our ISC350 with a K&N washable unit. Has anyone out there done that? comments?

I did the K&N and the engine "chip", and the dyno difference according to the dyno shop in Vancouver, WA adds 155 HP. I published this about a year ago and someone on this site responded with B.S. so I've never elaborated further. This is on a C9 Cat. Since I changed both items at the same time, I don't know how much good the air filter did by itself, but it was highly recommended when making the chip change. They also recommended going to the Aero muffler, but I didn't want more noise. I can tell you this though, that I no longer blow black smoke and my pipe is clean, and the torque gains are substantial. You'll also have to run your engine fan on high more often with the increased engine pressure. You can install a toggle switch which I'm now in the process of doing, or pull the fuse and run the fan on high all the time. There is also an decrease in fuel consumption, but I don't track this except via Silverleaf.

I installed a filter after Cummins did a recall on my former 98 Allure in 2000 #30255. The fuel pump had failed and there was a leak on the crossover pipe where a sensor plugged in. After installing the new pump, relocating the sensor on the pipe and adding the filter the ISC330 was a totally different animal. I could get almost 11mpg on the level driving 55 mph. At 65 It was easy to stay over 9. Smoking was there at high altitudes of Colorado and Montana but only briefly. Pulling grades of 7% to 8% improved and as I had the wax operated fan controller I never had any cooling issues. I did have a a small leak in the hose that fed the front heater but once that was fixed the smell of hot antifreeze was never an issue. That being said I was just lucky, because I only had the 3060 transmission and much more torque could have caused serious issues. We didn't have synthetic transmission fluid then, but if I had kept the coach that would have changed.
