A/C freezing up

Yahoo Message Number: 94428
Normally our front A/C will freeze up. After turning off unit for a short time water will start to drip inside from the return vent. We are currently in Key West and the temps are mid 80's with high humidity. Is this a normal occurrence, the freezing not the humidity, or is there something I can do to prevent freezing up Tom

Freezing coil temperatures are a leading indicator of a low Freon charge or could indicate a lack of air flow. Are you talking about the dash air or the roof air?

Agreed. If you have clean filters, no open windows and good air flow to the evaporator coil, freezing coil would be attributed to low gas charge...probably a leak somewhere in the system. You can have someone take a look at the unit with a leak checker after putting a set of gauges on it to verify gas charge. They can top it off with gas although some guys will refuse to do so without first finding the leak.

Except most roof top units do not have charging ports installed. If you put a tap a line on it for charging you will always have a small leak. They are famous for leaking. Plus by the time you find and fix the leak, evacuate and recharge most find it is cheaper to replace the unit, unless you can do it yourself.
