We were on the home stretch of a trip from So. Cal. to Portland OR when the 'check trans' light came on. I pulled over, tried to clear the error code and shut it down. I restarted and found I still had the error code (solenoid comm failure) and a box full of neutrals. We were roadside in the Cascade mountains and in the pouring rain with snow on the way. Time for the AAA tow truck. Six hours later we were towed to Salem for repairs by Brattain International.

The problem was a frayed wire from the transmission was rubbing against the hoses from the PTO and eventually wore through. I should have caught that one earlier. Don't forget to crawl under there and inspect things. It was 3 months and 2,000 miles since I last got under there so it doesn't take too long for problems to present.

Jim - Sorry to hear you had so much 'not' fun. At least it was at the end of the trip:)!

And spot on advice to do a regular 'under chassis crawl inspection'. Good flash light, and then let your eyes check things out. (Wires, hoses, air lines, loose or missing bolts, dampness from new leaks, signs of rust, electrical attachments showing signs of needing cleaning, etc.).

If an owner does not want or feel they are qualified to do this themselves, then work with a shop you know and trust to do this for you. Be willing to pay the normal shop rate, to have this visual inspection performed.
