Front Mask

I have the clear front mask on my coach which looks terrible. I checked with a body shop and they think the paint is OK and the front would look like new if I would remove the mask. Has anyone done this with success? I have a heat gun but am afraid of getting it to hot and messing up the paint. Any suggestions?

I've pulled many off over the years, here's what I say to "all" my customers that want this done.... You need to be prepared for paint work after removing the paint protection, 50/50 chance that paint will come with the mask. We use both heat and chemicals to help remove it, but even being super gentle in the removal it can pull the paint. The big, normally unknown question is when was the mask put on in relation to when the paint was put on. If the coach came out of the booth and the mask put on before the paint had full cure, then it'll be a higher risk of pulling off with the mask. If the mask was put on from the dealer then it's a lower risk of paint pulling off. Either way there's always a risk.

Danny,

I just recently had this done on my coach. Didn't want to take the time to do it myself so wasn't cheap""in the $1,000 range. I was lucky in that no paint came off when the mask was removed. I store my coach indoors and the mask wasn't really bad which probably helped the situation. I was warned however that paint may peel off in the process. After having this done and applying a couple of coats of wax, the front end looks like new.

Good Luck,

I took ours off myself 2 years ago, and it's a substantial project. Did it in warm weather (75 -85°) with turpentine, lots of rags, plastic razor blades, and a ton of patience. Absolutely no paint damage after 11+ years on the coach, and the new one looks terrific. Good luck.

Last June I removed the front "mask" from my 2000 Magna. I called 3M to ask the best way to do it and they said... Get a load of plastic razor blades and a blade holder, a can of 3M adhesive remover, something to sit on and a 6 pack of beer as it is going to take a minute!. A heat gun will speed up the process, use your common sense on the amount of heat. So.... I did that and it did take a while but did come off with no scratches in the paint and the paint was like new. Clear coat in good shape. Some cleaner wax and it was good to go. On my Magna, as it was an older coach, the plastic shield was thicker that the ones they used in later years. The newer masks are much thinner and as such come off easier.....

Removed mine on an 05 Inspire. Order plastic razor blades, 3M adhesive remover, Goo Be Gone, rags, and something to sit on, plenty of patience, and about 21 hours. Mine came off without removing paint.
