Propane tank certification changed from 12 to 10 years

Two weeks ago I went to fill a 40# propane tank and was told I had 2.5 years left (09/2007 plus 12 years) before recertification. Yesterday I went to the same facility and was told my tank had expire and they could not refill it. But they made a mistake in reading the month and then advised me that it would expire 09/2007 plus 10 years - 09/2017!!!

They showed me a new handout from their bulk supplier which said:

"You may have heard that the D.O.T. (USA) has changed the rules for cylinder requalification. This new rule changes the time period for requalification of new or refurbished cylinders from 12 to 10 years. ... This will go into effect on Monday, January 23, 2017."

Good thing is I am glad that I still have 8 months left to stage over a replacement (use the old tank completely and have a replacement on hand). If it had expired, I would be out of propane as that tank was almost empty.

What have others hear?

You are talking about a portable not mounted tank correct?

Yes, the new 10 year recertification period (instead of 12 years) applies to portable tanks per both U-Haul and Flying J.

Horizontally mounted tanks are permanently affixed to the vehicle. As such, they are ASME tanks and not subject to DOT regulations. Regular inspection is encouraged.
