Fred - Do you qualify that recommendation based upon the inverter/charger type and age?
The MS2812 we installed along with the Smart Battery Combiner, has worked flawlessly for us for over three years now.
We have Lifeline AGM's for the house, and a CAT 8D Maintenance Free for the chassis. Magnum charger set to the Lifeline setting, vs the rest of the AGM manufacture's settings. (I called Lifeline, and talked with them quite a bit about this, as I also had an option to set custom levels for Bulk/Absorb/Float. The tech at Lifeline said that with my X's 4 L16 bank, I probably could have safely sent more juice then the standard Lifeline setting. He said that Magnum consulted with Lifeline extensively on the values.)
I do have the temperature sender in the mix too, which I feel also helps protect the batteries.
Never any sings of cooking of the Chassis Battery.
I will also note, that we have a MidNite Classic 150 Controller in the mix, fed by 1200W of 48V solar.
The MidNite Classic 150 and Magnum MS2812 have played very well together. The Magnum Smart Batter Combiner does not care where the power is coming from to the House, once it detects all is well on the House side, it diverts power to the Chassis.
I will agree that in my Bounder, and even with the first charger/inverter we had in the CC - that I would see evidence of the House and Chassis battery outgassing.
My main reason for posting, is to validate if your caution was more for these older inverter/chargers?
TIA, and best,
Smitty
