MPG?

Yahoo Message Number: 113048
Just wondering what all you wonderful Country Coach owners are getting for mileage? We just took our first trip from Phoenix to Austin and we were only getting 5 mpg. Our motorhome is 40' diesel pusher but expected a little better mileage. We did fight with wind on one of the days traveling. Appreciate any feedback. Thank you, Vicki

We get about 5 mpg with a Chevy Silverado in tow. I'm not conservative on interstate. If the speed limit is 70 the cruise is set on 72. We also run the genny with A/C's running if it's really hot out.

I usually get between 6.5 to 7.2 depending on terrain unless I hit a big bead wind. Speed is typically 62-65 on a 40 Inspire with a C-9. Also have a chip set on the first setting which I believe is 10%

We get 6.5 to 7.0 mpg depending on conditions. I drive about 65 mph on interstate. I also have the wax valve which helps a little. It is a 2006 Magna towing a Jeep GC so we are pretty heavy, 47K lbs fully loaded.

Vicki,
We just completed a 6,100 mile trip from Dallas throughout New England & Canada.
We averaged right at 7 MPG, we tow a Ford Explorer.
We may have similar coaches.

The wax valve replaces the Sauer Danfoss fan control system, which is complicated and problematic. The wax valve is a much simpler system, coach never overheats, get improved mileage. Eric Olstrom installed it a couple years ago, it's a great mod.

I also have the wax valve. Average is 7.5+/- depending on conditions, running mostly at 61 MPH. Can I assume you all get you MGP off the SilverLeaf? That figure only reports diesel used by the engine so not genset, etc. included. I also use the SilverLeaf to monitor the fuel tank gallons used since the last fill, usually comes within 1 gallon of what we take on when we fuel up (when the genset isn't running).

Pencil and paper mileage over the last 16,735 miles is 6.8 mpg. That includes all diesel fuel consumption by the engine, Hurricane, and generator. Going down the road we're usually around 48,000 pounds which includes a 4,700 pound toad. We have a 2002 Affinity, 42' long, with tag, and a C12 505 HP CAT engine.

I think the computer says the mileage is somewhere between 7.0 and 7.2.

I traveled full time for 9-1/2 years. Kept track of each fuel stop on an Excel spread sheet mileage I logged the amount of fuel per fill up, cost per gallon per fill up, avg. mpg per fill up, avg mpg for aggregate miles traveled, and location of each fill up. My entire mpg was 7.02 mpg. I had a 40" 2005 Inspire with 400 CAT. and towed a AWD Saturn Vue. Traveled over 60,000 miles.

In my initial few trips in our 42' Lexa with the Cat 515hp C15, I've averaged right around 5mpg. However, I've noticed excessive black smoke which led me to find a leak in the charge air cooler. Having this repaired now and hoping for not only better performance, but hoping for better mileage as well. All mileage factored while towing a 14' Wrangler unlimited and using the genset as needed.

That's the implication. I have no practical way to measure exactly how much fuel the Hurricane and generator use independently of the engine.

Given that, I divide miles traveled by fuel pumped into the tank and make no allowance for Hurricane, generator, or "idling".

For the first 57,451 miles of the coach's life the Caterpillar ECM said it got 6.96 MPG.

At this point it's all hair splitting. I'm happy to know that it gets something close to 7 mpg and continue to record every mile and every gallon so that if something starts to go awry, I may get a bit of advanced warning.

Usually going east from El Paso on I-10 and then going thru Fredericksburg to Austin we average between 8.2 and 8.4 mpg traveling at 67 mph. Pushing over 72 takes us down to right at 8 mpg. Now traveling west is any ones guess do to the prevailing winds. I dropped down to as low as 7.5 mpg at 72 to as high as 8,2 at 67 mph. If the wind is really bad I can drive 55 and still only achieve in the high 7 range. We pulled a Honda Odyssey for 8 years and then a CR-v. Saving about 1000 lbs gave us about 3 to 4 tenths mpg.

Sounds to me like you have a Catepillar 500 hp engine. To be specific the older C-12. But with the high serial number you might have a C-13, either way you have an engine that loves fuel. But you should be getting in the low 7's middle 6's so I think you have a real issue. As a guess I would say you have a bad charge air radiator or need your valves adjusted. I had a faulty injection pump, which caused me performance issues not so much milage issues with my Cummins in 2010. TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731

I do have the big Cat, C13, 525hp. I've had the overhead done and the CAC pressure checked. At the last service the Cat folks said everything was good.

We usually get 6.8 - 7.8 on flat highways below 5,000 feet. At altitude or climbing or on really hot days where we can't develop full boost, our mileage goes down. Engine and tow configuration below.

Just wondering what all of you wonderful Country Coach owners are averaging for mpg? We took our 1st trip from Phoenix to Austin with our 40' diesel pusher without any toads, and only averaged 5-5.8 mpg. This was disappointing and expensive. We did run into some winds but still expected better mileage. Would appreciate any feedback/suggestions.
Thank you so much,
Vicki

Having driven 90K so far on our 42ft w/400ISL, I saw a marked increase in mileage when we bought a toad with a max tow speed of 65 mph. We had thought 6.3 was normal, but always drove at 70+ with Wranglers. Now consistent 7.8+ on long trips with relatively few large mountains, and cruise set at 60. Headwinds are always a factor as well. Safe travels.

We took a 13,300 mile trip recently with our 45 ft. '09 Allure Crane Prairie from Southern California to Maine and got 7.2! Ran the gen and Hydro Hot quite a bit as well. We love our ISM 500 Cummins! We also had a '15 Jeep Grand Cherokee in tow.

Vickie.........It's impossible for anyone to address your question because no one knows what brand, model or HP displacement you're talking about. I get between 9-10 MPG with my coach.

We took a 10,500 mile trip from California to Washington DC then down to Key West and back in our 2007 Intrigue with Cat C13 525 hp towing a 2005 Honda Accord averaged 7.53 mpg. I try to keep speed at 60 mph

We have found it important to watch things on our Silverleaf closely. Cruising at 60 mph will do much better than running 70. Each engine/ coach combo has a sweet spot. Our 40' Intrigue (48,000 lb with ISM 500 seems to do best 1400-1600 RPM's making
