Domestic battery replacement

Yahoo Message Number: 115564
The manual on my 2000 Intrigue says the domestic batteries are two 8D semi deep cycle 12V wet batteries. About 5 years ago, they had been replaced with 4 Deka Series 24 deep cycle 12V batteries. I want to change those batteries out due to their age and would like to go back to the original specs of the two 12V deep cycle 8D's. The manual does not state what the cold cranking amps should be. Any suggestions on which batteries I should purchase?
Thank you!

Hi Steve,
Why not consider 4 6V golf car batteries which will occupy the same space as the 2 8D's. They are less than $100 at Sams or Costco, are easier to handle due to about half the weight, and will probably function just as well or better. I changed out the 8D's in our '01Intrigue years ago and went with 6 as we were doing a lot of dry camping in those days. That took some redesign of the battery compartment.

Interstate SRM-8DS, 240amp-hr, deep cycle (house or domestic battery use).

CCA is a start battery spec.

Steve, my Intrigue battery setup parallels yours. I'm now using 2 DEKA HP 8D 1425 CCA Batteries. They're the same size, reasonably priced, and doing a great job. I recommend them.

I wouldn't go back to lead acid batteries. The ones you have now have a much longer service life. As I remember I think the Dekas are between 1100 and 1200 amps. If your inverter charger hasn't been upgraded you will find you can't seem to get a full charge or service from your batteries. I changed mine three years ago and the batteries are still going strong after 6 years. Another thing to consider is the older chargers aren't designed to adequately handle your Dekas full potential. Steve - I'm not clear on if you mean the term 'domestic' to be the same as 'house'? If so, then CCA has nothing to do with House Deep Cycle batteries.

In the Intrigue of your era. I that the Cummins 8.3 ISC engine? If so, I'd suspect a good quality single 8D Starter Battery would be all that is needed. You mentioned 'wet' so I'd suggest a single 8D CAT MF Starter Battery of 1500CCA, would be more then adequate to get the 8.3 going. (We hav an 04 Allure, with July of 03 ISL370 CAPS era ISL engine, and Country Coach sent them out the door with a single 8D for starting duty. We had solid performance, with at the above mentioned CAT MF Wet Cell 8D battery. (Recommended by another CC Yahoo Group owner, about 6 to 7 years ago.) You could also end up with higher CCA, by going with two Grp31 Wet Starter batteries. (But that would require recabling. And since you can always 'bridge/link' house into the mix if needed, you sort of already have 'multiple batteries' to support Chassis/Starter duty:)!)

Now. If you are talking about House batteries. Please let us know if you do mostly Park to Park, with Shore Power, traveling. Or, if you do boon dock for a days, weeks at a time. Because the suggestions on House Batteries might will vary based upon House demand usage.

For sure, no absolute right or wrong here - just choices. And input would be better, based upon Chassis vs House duty:)! (And sorry, if I did not get which batteries you were referring too:)!)

Best to you,

Sorry, I should've clarified. Yes I am referring to house batteries, not starting battery. I had replaced my starting battery last year with a single 8D, but want to replace my current 5 year old deep cycle batteries. I primarily use the coach park to park with shore power hook up and only dry dock occasionally.
Thank you all for the suggestions. I am looking into all these options!

Thanks for the additional info Steve.

House batteries are usually measured via Amp Hours where as Starting Batteries are measured via CCA. Their are also Marine Batteries, are sort of a hybrid between House and Starting batteries (They can both start a boat engine, as well as provide the 12V demand needs, for the boating community. But usually they're a compromise on both ultimate CCA and or longer lasting Amp Hours:)!).

Many of the batteries at SAMS Clubs, are Marine 8D batteries. Though you can also find 'Heavy Duty Commercial Batteries', which I consider to be Starting Batteries. Some SAMS Clubs, usually by region, do have choices of true Deep Cycle 8D batteries. Some will order them in for you. I have found that the Sams Clubs in Southern California, at least the two or three I went thru, had different stock then was reference on the SAMS club web page. Duracell 8D's Deep Cycle were available, about 6-8 months ago. Who know if they are now or not:)!

With your usage, and if you plan on proactive replacement on a 5 year cycle. The SAMS Deep Cycle 8D's (Probably Duracell) would be a reasonable choice, and realistically support you over this time period.

If you want to spend more money, you can look into:

-Interstate are often an option
-Deka's (But suspect Lee was talking Starting 8D's as he mentioned the CCA rating. Vs House(?).
-Trojan's also have a good rep, especially for GC2 6V's.
-Crown has been getting good reviews by those who use them in solar home applications

The Interstate and Deka's will be more expensive then SAMS, and less expensive then say Trojans or Crown (Rolls, and other brands too:)!)

I'd wager money, that many of the RV's you a pass going down the road, have Marine 8D's from SAMS in them. And for light usage, those would probably work OK too. (But I would make the effort to obtain a True Deep Cycle 8D from SAMS, or elsewhere.)

If you want to have zero maintenance, and spend more money, and at the same time probably beef up your AH capacity, faster recharging times, and usually with higher rated DoD Life Cycle (How long the batteries are rated to live with good care and usage.) - you could go AGM. Lifeline, Fullriver, etc. But for your usage, probably overkill and price wise quite a bit more:)!

Good luck to you, and go have some fun,

Sorry to be hijacking this to make a post on a different subject.

We have to have 7-8 windows worked on sooner rather than later due to the fogging up. We have an 06 Inspire. We live in MN, and Searcy, Arkansas, is less driving than Suncoast in Hudson, FL, or LazyDays, near Tampa, FL.

Would anyone with experience at RV Fog Doctor let us know what they think after having their windows repaired there and the same for Suncoast and LazyDays please. It's going to cost what it'll cost, and the time matters too. If you've had the repairs done for a while, also, what do you think?

We will be very grateful to read anything you have to say.

We did all of ours ( except for cab which I did tinted laminate glass) at Fog Doc and they came out great. It's been a couple years now and they are still clear. Nice folks at Fog Doc. You need an appointment well in advance and they have 50 A service to park at their shop, take about 6 coaches. I highly recommend them. Pretty cheap too, I think about $250 per window, can't remember. They do quality work. Best silicone caulk beads I have ever seen in my life!

They are currently working on 2 of my windows. Full hookups while you wait but all connections are at the back of the coach. So far great work. Had our previous CC Inspire worked on years ago with complete satisfaction.
Not very busy right now.

We had 5 of our fogged windows done at RV Fog Dr. in 2014. The large driver's window was around $400 and each of the other windows was about $200. Nice folks, full hook ups at their place. They take your coach inside to R&R the windows and you can stay in the coach if you like or use their lounge.

Now two of the windows developed just a slight amount of condensation about three weeks later. We were in Oregon at the time. Called RV Fog Dr. and they were surprised and offered to pay RV Glass Solutions in Coburg, OR to redo the windows. RV Glass Solutions could not get us in for a month so we just stopped by RV Fog Dr. on the way back home to Virginia. Even though we only had a small amount of what appeared to be condensation one time, they re-did those two windows. We've had no issues since.

At the time their warranty was 2 years. I believe Suncoast offers a longer warranty. I would not hesitate to use RV Fog Dr. again. They also do paint work and collision repair.
