Travel Mode

I'm having a problem with my Travel Mode ... I think. First question is: when does the Travel Mode actually turn on? When the engine is turned on? Or when the transmission is put into gear? Or when the parking break is released? There is a little green indicator light on my 2002 Intrigue that is supposed to come on when the coach is in the Travel Mode. But the light is so dim that unless you lay on the floor and put your eyeball up to the teeny weeny light, you can't tell whether it is on or off.
My Travel Mode seems to be operating intermittently and yes, I have checked the fuse. In fact, I have run wires from the normal fuse location behind the panel in front of the passenger seat, to a switch and a fuse on the dash so that I can turn the Travel Mode off when I have had Ride Height failures in the past.
Basic question though is: when does the Travel Mode actually turn on?

My '03/4 Intrigue 42ft Ovation turns on the moment I touch it, and the coach proceeds to level and adjust for travel quite rapidly. So far no issues. Safe travels.

Jeff,
I'm confused by your answer ... as soon as you touch what??

Sorry. The Travel Mode button on the HWH panel on the lower midsection of the dash. Actually, mine also goes automatically into Travel Mode if I shift into gear without touching the button as well. Hope this helps. Safe travels.

Sounds like one of the power circuits is not working. HWH brain has power from chassis battery, house battery and ignition/accessory. My chassis and ignition fuse connectors in front run bay fuse boxes were bad. I put in in-line fuses to bypass those fuses and that was problem. These Bussman fuse boxes are notorious for having connection problems causing intermittent problems with all sorts of circuits ( headlights, wipers, HWH) and yet when you check fuse it is ok. Major PIA to replace the fuse boxes, but that is ultimate solution. I will just keep bypassing the bad fuse connections with in-line fuses while I can.

On my HWH "500 Series" (in a 1998 Intrigue) goes into travel mode whenever the 'off' button is pressed with the key on, or when the parking brake is released. As a matter of fact the parking brake must be engaged in order to have the HWH system in any mode at all other than travel.

When put into travel mode the system will release air to the ride height valves and the HWH is essentially not doing anything at that point. There is a air pressure sensor for each corner which will cause the green travel light to turn off and one or more of the corner red lights to illuminate if air pressure drops below 75 psi in any particular corner, but the HWH system itself is completely passive when in travel mode.

I had a hole or other damage to my control panel's cover/screen that made some of the lights including the travel light difficult to see. When I was at HWH last week they replaced that cover for free, it looked like it just popped out and back in easily. Maybe they will send you one by mail?

The green LED comes on as soon as I touch 'Travel Mode' but will sometimes go off and 'Leveling' will display.

I had the folks at HWH in Moscow, IA check my system and they told me that until the coach airs up sufficiently, it will not stay in Travel Mode. If you release the parking brake and put the coach into gear, it will go into 'Travel Mode' but the air bags may not be fully inflated. HWH said the lines to the front bags are small (3/8") on most CC's and it takes longer for the front bags to air up.

So, I press Travel Mode as soon as I start the coach and wait until the green Travel Mode lights stays on and I can see or feel the front bags fully inflated to travel height. That may take several minutes.

I start engine. Idle. Let bags fill. Press travel mode. She's green. I throw her into gear and head out.

I used to dump the air whenever I arrived somewhere (reason one - she looks cooler when slammed on the ground and two - older dog who has a hard time getting to the first step.)

That always took an extra minute for the bags to fill completely so no longer dump. Plus don't have the need for our older dog to whether coach anymore (sad).

Anyways a short minute or two after starting her and we're travel mode equals green light and we head out.

That sounds like what they told me last week also, with the more technical explanation that the green travel light comes on when all 4 air bags have at least 75 PSI - the HWH system including the green travel light has no concept or awareness of actual "ride height" when in travel mode, it can only tell when sufficient air pressure (>75 psi) is present at each corner. It is up to the proper adjustment and functionality of the ride height valves to achieve the actual height when traveling (which is outside of the HWH system's scope).

If leveling had released the air from one or more corners then when switching to travel mode it can take a minute or two for the pressure to rebuild in that corner, longer if it takes a while for the coach's air to get up to pressure when you first start the engine.

Jeff, you wrote: "The Travel Mode button on the HWH panel on the lower midsection of the dash. Actually, mine also goes automatically into Travel Mode if I shift into gear without touching the button as well."

But ... My 2002 Intrigue has a Travel Mode indicator light but does not have a Travel Mode button. It has an ON button which turns the leveling system on for manual leveling (1 push), or automatic leveling (double push). These modes only work once we are parked. But there is no button to put it into Travel Mode. That was why I was asking what action triggers the Travel Mode to initiate ... ignition key? engine start? transmission shift into drive? or parking brake release?
Thanks, Steve

Steve, The HWH panel in my ’02 Intrigue has an “OFF” button that when pressed goes into Travel Mode.  If I forget to push "OFF” before traveling I’ll discover myself driving down with the coach leveled in the same angle as the last campsite.  I believe it is supposed to automatically go into Travel mode when putting the coach into gear, but in mine there is a circuit board behind the HWH panel that contains a burnt diode (or burnt “something” if it isn’t a diode).  A tech at Transwest north of Denver fried the board for me when performing a repair task.  Fortunately the HWH works as intended other than the quirk that I need to manually put it into Travel mode by pushing the Off button.

John, thanks for the tip that on your ’02 intrigue, the “OFF” button puts your coach into the Travel Mode. I will give that a try. When you do that, does the green “Travel Mode” indicator light come on after you press the “OFF” button? The board that you spoke of with the burnt component, do you think it is something that could be ordered from HWH and replaced? Thanks for your input.Steve, ’02 Intrigue 11382  Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Steve, yes --- the “Off” button activates the Travel mode light and I can feel the coach  equalizing the airbags.  Regarding the burnt circuit board, I stopped by HWH during a trip and they looked at it… said that the board was something installed by CC and wasn’t their board.  I know the board contains the “speech” module that recites instructions before engaging the slides (and is still working), but other than that I’m not sure what else it controls.
